Graham Greene’s novella The Third Man was written purely to use as the basis for his screenplay and was not intended for publication. He was later persuaded to publish it. He felt (correctly) that the film was better but the book is quite good.

Man from Atlantis (1977) was the first of four successful TV-movies, to be followed by an unsuccessful series. It's a reasonably interesting story about a water-breathing man from Atlantis stuck in the modern world. Features a fine mad scientist.

d4doome,

@MarkMaguire I haven't seen the series and I've only seen the first TV-movie. The consensus seems to be that the TV-movies are a lot better than the series. I will eventually try to get around to watching the other movies and the series.

d4doome,

@MarkMaguire I watch an enormous amount of 1960s/1970s TV shows and I'm usually pleasantly surprised by how well they stand up. They're certainly better than anything made today. They're just more fun and more stylish.

The Italian-Spanish co-production MURDER MANSION (1972). Three people take refuge in a spooky house. There are rumours of vampires and witches. But is this a gothic horror movie or a giallo? It doesn't matter. It's crazy oddball and fun and looks good.

I feel like David Cronenberg is at his best when he’s exploring body horror and how it relates to sex (Shivers, Rabid) and the body horror + politics stuff (Scanners) or the just plain body horror work doesn’t grab me the same way.

… maybe that says more about me, IDK.

d4doome,

@thudfactor I've seen quite a few of Cronenberg's movies and mostly they do nothing for me. I do think CRASH was pretty extraordinary though.

Venus Smith, the forgotten Avengers girl. She was Steed's partner in six 1963 episodes. Fascinatingly different from the other Avengers girls. She had zero combat skills but she was a useful agent. And quite charming.

Arthur C. Clarke's A Fall of Moondust (1961), the closest he came to writing a sci-fi thriller. And it's a pretty decent one. The dust cruiser Selene takes tourists on jaunts across the the largest of the lunar dust seas, the Sea of Thirst.

The Sea Wolves (1980) an old-fashioned war adventure movie in the very best meaning of the term. With Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, David Niven, Trevor Howard, Patrick Macnee. There's a refreshing lack of cynicism

Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Coppola's best movie. I had no problems with the love story. There are hints in the novel that justify it. By 1992 a fresh approach was needed. Made when Hollywood could still make visually interesting films. Great movie.

Harry Harrison’s 1961 novel The Stainless Steel Rat is a semi-comic sci-fi adventure romp about the adventures of a criminal in a future in which crime scarcely exists. There's a fine lady super-villain and it's superb entertainment.

Rollercoaster (1977) gets lumped into the disaster movie genre but it's really a suspense thriller, and a very good and very exciting one. It's about a brilliant evil extortionist who targets amusement parks, especially the rollercoasters.

E. Howard Hunt, Watergate conspirator and CIA agent, wrote many excellent hardboiled crime and spy novels. As David St John he wrote Diabolus in 1971. A hugely enjoyable lurid occult/spy thriller featuring drugs, satanic cults and sex orgies.

James Gunn's Deadlier Than the Male (1943), one of the strangest of all American crime novels. In fact one of the strangest of all American novels. Extreme noir fiction. Fascinating in a bizarre, morbid and very unsettling way.

d4doome,

@thudfactor Used copies are around $600 to $1,000. But at the moment ABE have a used paperback copy for five bucks.
