knowing the base rules, clever grammar, and beautiful/cool/interesting sentences are all well-and-good, but what i find is the hardest part of writing anything is structure. this doesn't only apply to telling stories, but also writing a formal essay and anything else; how should the paragraphs be ordered? obviously in some coherent structure with transitions that make sense and a flow that flows, but how do you do this successfully? that is the hardest part for me.

i try to plan things out with an outline usually, but (i think) i produce better material when i write via stream-of-consciousness. an outline feels like a prison that i have to adhere to, and coming up with an outline for something that is only a semblance of its final form always feels forced and weird.

i think a good compromise is to write stream-of-consciousness, then mold that afterwards; move stuff around, delete stuff, and then maybe refine a rough outline from the stream. i've done this once or twice, and it seemed to produce decent results.

[12] 10 Things I Hate About You is a romantic comedy targeted toward the teen demographic. In essence, it’s William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” retold with a ‘90s high school backdrop. It features a young Heath Ledger as the leading man and Julia Stiles as “the shrew” to be “tamed.” But who’s really being tamed here? It’s really a charming film full of witty dialog, excellent performances, and a great soundtrack.

can you name the bands on the wall?

the one above Julia's head is the cover of Juliana Hatfield's 1992 album "Hey Babe" ('I See You' and 'Everybody Loves Me But You' are superb tracks off that album); can't figure out the others, although the one above Juliana's with the girl with the glasses looks familiar. #music

@jake4480 Lilys are one of my favorite bands. they are primarily Kurt Heasley and a rotating group of other musicians, similar to GbV in that way. sometimes derided for their derivative nature, as Kurt becomes obsessed with other bands/genres and emulates them with different Lilys albums. example, first they were primarily a shoegaze/MBV group, then veered into an obsession with 60s-british invasion on this (and the album after this).

buru5,
@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

@jake4480 there's also this idea that derivative is "bad," but all art uses art before it as a foundation. artists like David Bowie were extremely derivative of their influences, but they made GOOD music which, at that point, who cares. same applies with Lilys or any other act that wears their influences on their sleeve, i think

our orthodontist society is out of control. messed up teeth add character. barring health issues: it's societally-imposed vanity. i will still kiss even the most f$&ked up of teeth mouths.

buru5,
@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

this is a weird post. i will admit.

buru5,
@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

if you have brilliant-white-super-straight teeth i am more inclined to not like you. this is one of the many examples of how i am wired poorly for modern society which is good and bad (mostly bad). people spend thousands of dollars to get the blinding teeth, and (on average) this will improve social standing with the socialites and influencers but it will negatively impact your standing with weirdo adults who never grew out of their goth phase.

buru5,
@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

@spinning_bird @Badolwen blinding white teeth are hardly "natural." even with daily care, your teeth are likely to be slightly off-white.

somewhat related: i used to smoke heavily. i no longer smoke, but my teeth retain this history in the form of yellowish stains.

buru5,
@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

@spinning_bird @Badolwen yes, you were one wrong interaction away from being killed there. you dodged a bullet.

buru5,
@buru5@mstdn.games avatar

@jake4480 @spinning_bird @Badolwen maybe we have reached the root of this: you can't erase the past. those who try: fail, and are transparent. embrace it.

i typically hate exclamation points. i would be ok with them being removed from human memory.

@rootcompute

question marks have a purpose, indicate a question. periods indicate the end of a sentence. exclamation points are very weird in this context; a specific punctuation mark to signify a specific emotional response? why not other weird punctuation for other emotions?

i wonder what the punctuation mark for "responding to a rootCompute" post would look like, maybe a little square with squiggles in it?
