Collecting old computer and video game stuff is a hobby along with trying to repair what I can. Still learning. My posts and follows are strictly kept to things related to neat retro PC/Video Game stuff I find, am working on, collecting and interacting with the community on the same. Old pic, this was my last server at my parents house before I moved lol I think I was probably backing up the data before I got rid of it

@kiwa new candidate for the hotdog stand floppy website?

Now that I'm in a part testing mood I need to test this pile of random agp cards

RetroFox,
@RetroFox@bitbang.social avatar

@kiwa Is that an All in Wonder card? I think I had the same one in both of my cube PCs - the dongle has double VGA, Composite, and some other things IIRC on it.

Nothing for flea market Friday this week - thought Saturday would be the same but actually came across some things. Started off finding a Apple branded box of DVD-Rs for $1. Just thought it was interesting and 4/5 are sealed. Wonder what premium Apple charged for these…

And then near the end of my wandering, came across this MDD G4 for $10 and the guy tossed a Gen 1(?) Apple TV on top with it. Couldn’t say no (though I need neither item). I’ll have to test it later - see if either item works.

The Apple TV works as well. Not sure what I’ll do with it but it was tossed in. I’ve heard of folks hacking them to run other things but haven’t looked into that.

my neighbourhood squirrel was upset her bird feeder got flooded from the rain and soaked all the seed.

so this morning i drilled drains into the feeder and refilled it with fresh seed. she showed up a minute later and made herself at home 😂

@vga256 I like to watch the squirrels and birds - just wish the squirrels wouldn't pig out on the feeder sometimes. I have one that will just jump through the air to latch onto the feeder and just cling and eat.

Did pickup one fun item today. Found this little Sharp Aquos lc-13s1u-s TV with PSU for $10. I like that it has composite, component and s-video inputs in the 4:3 ratio - which is great for retro stuff. Even has a carry handle and thankfully the back cover was still there.

At first the screen was kind of dark - but after fiddling in the menus found where the tv was set to ‘dark’ and changed it. It has so many options - even PAL modes. It’s just a really cool tv and Sonic Boom will always be a banger in my book :)

I've managed to go through all the photos I took and updated the two albums - please have a look and let me know if you like something I captured! :)

One pickup today at the flea - got this boxed Canon Selphy CP780 for $8. Gave it a test print and it works! I think this uses a film color cartridge similar to the Mavica printer LGR showcased. Fun to watch it run the photo through three times for the three color layers.

RetroFox,
@RetroFox@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 from what I saw, looks like $21 for a cartridge

RetroFox,
@RetroFox@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 that I don’t know - I’ve just been wanting to make a few physical prints here and there. Thing I didn’t realize is it seems to need the postcard sized photo paper so the other 4x6 stocks I wanted to use won’t work. Thankfully it came with a couple packs

i’ve been reading miyazaki’s Starting Point, and it is replete with thinking about what human beings are, and what cartoons can offer them. i knew he was an exceptional animator, but never realized how much effort he put into the psychological foundations of his stories.

“I feel that viewers should feel liberated after watching cartoon films, and that the characters should also ultimately be liberated. So I like the idea that the Conan characters actually became more innocent at the end.

What really makes me mad about most TV anime, to the extent that I have watched it, is that the shows don't have any sort of purifying or cathartic effect at all. I really can't stand them. I think they don't have any respect for real humanity. The only way they can imagine humans changing is by assuming that people want to change. It's too terrifying for the creators to deal with characters that seem incapable of changing even as they are changing.” (p. 304)

When I think back on his films, I am struck at how many of them end on a non-neurotic note. There is no overcoming the evil bad person. The protagonist doesn’t get what s/he wants. There is just an uneasy resolution to problems - that were ultimately because of ego, not because of evil.

I wish there were more writers like this.

@vga256 that last paragraph really sums up how I felt after watching Princess Monoke for the first time - and it was such a breath of fresh air in media for me. Sure there's that march of progress/industrialization vs nature that also shows up in Pom Poko, but the characters are just people. Iron town is just people ultimately trying to survive and the wolf/forest spirits are trying to preserve nature. The two main chars. are caught in between their worlds with no easy decisions. Very human.

So what did I pick up? A silver TI-99/4A for $5, a MacBook G4 for $5, and a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV37 for $5 - see a pattern? :) No adapters but cheap enough and I’m a sucker for original stickers on the Vaio. The poor G4 is grungy but it’ll clean up.

image/png

RetroFox,
@RetroFox@bitbang.social avatar

So initial test of plugging power into the G4 MacBook - the little ring doesn’t light up and the jack feels very loose. Thinking I’ll have to get in and solder it. But I was able to charge its battery in my other MacBook and get some life. First boot - three lights and no bong or video. Powered off and on again. Now the lights aren’t on, still no bong but screen came on. Started to boot but then kernel panicked- I’ll have to work with it some more.

RetroFox,
@RetroFox@bitbang.social avatar

I let the battery charge more in the other Mac. Tried again in the iBook G4. This time got three beeps and front light on - apparently that’s a RAM issue. Checked under the keyboard and none installed - so it’s the onboard RAM that’s failing to read for some reason. So I looked up the RAM type- apparently I have the 1.33 model that uses PC2700 RAM. As it happens, the Vaio I bought today uses just that. Robbed it for now and after a PRAM reset, the G4 booted.

RetroFox,
@RetroFox@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 the onboard RAM is just four chips soldered right on. It's going to take a bit more expertise than a cleaning :) There was no RAM in the one expansion slot, there is now - which is letting it boot.

In other news, the lab rearrangement is going quite well. Not quite as planned though (I hoped to get the new 3d printer set up today). I got side tracked a bit, excavated my streaming corner instead and also mounted some test speakers to the wall for future audio repairs. 😅
On a positive note, I’m very likely going to be able to stream some retro gaming on Twitch again soon (that’s the plan for this year anyway).

RetroFox,

@janbeta is the lab re-arrange / setup going to be a video? Love to see the layouts / behind the scenes kind of things :)

Another mild weather day at the flea, lots of vendors out hoping to make Xmas sales. Saw this Palm V for $3, in good shape but no charger - passed on it since I have some other PDAs, also a Telstar Ranger (didn’t ask), and a box of floppies - which I have too many of.

I did pick up a couple things. Spotted this IBM PCjr ColorPaint manual for $1. Figure I can VCF freepile it and some PCjr owner will take it. Also four PC magazines from the 90s. Also $1 each. Will be fun to flip through:)

@kiwa XD Hey, it beat the heck out of taking a box of floppies to the computer lab and having to part the files in to 1.44mb parts.
