Well this is certainly enlightening. And will also offend a lot of Taylor Swift fans, no doubt. https://youtu.be/ulli06xpzqQ?si=MTUqZI6Dm5qwQrHH

MS26,

@simon Hmm. This is interesting. I don't consider myself a Taylor Swift fan like the ones he talks about in this video. I mean, I do like her well enough but not the way everyone else does. I think the Katy Perry thing was probably deliberate since they were fighting and that's a big thing for Taylor to do that same day, particularly noting Katy's drop in popularity. But I don't really think the Billie Eilish thing has enough evidence to say she did that on purpose. For one thing, while I agree with Billie about vinyls being wasteful, if you call out other artists publicly like that, you kind of open yourself up for retaliation. Everyone had to know who she was mostly talking about. Even so, selling vinyls that are optional with only one song each on them is not nearly as big a move as releasing an album, and I doubt Billie suffered that much as a result, seeing as she herself is quite popular.

The average English proficiency of Uber drivers in Vancouver is frustratingly low. I can't fault people for doing whatever job they can in such a hellishly expensive city, but it'd be nice if I could maybe communicate some basic things to the people who are tasked with making sure I get places.

MS26,

@simon I can. I know this might come off as insensitive, but I think if you are going to do a service that requires you to work with people in a location where English is the primary language or one of them, you are obligated to do your best to learn that language. Otherwise, you are naturally not going to be as helpful as somebody who I as the passenger can communicate with and that may be shown in your ratings. I want to get from point A to point B safely and quickly, and anything that gets in the way of that is getting in the way of the driver doing the job they're getting paid to do, such as not being able to communicate and having confusion.

MS26,

@Caoimhe @simon Yes there is a button to do that by the messages, but if they send multiple in a row sometimes it will only translate one at a time.

MS26,

@Caoimhe @simon Yeah usually it's fine, but I've found that all three of the drivers I've had who couldn't speak any English gave me problems. Two of them straight up wouldn't answer their phones or chats and one of them refused to come to me and told me I had to go to exactly where Uber put the pin which was inaccurate. Every other driver I've had could speak a little bit of English and didn't do that stuff. I know some of it might not have had to do with language at all but it took much longer to communicate with them and I got the impression that contributed.

MS26,

@simon @Caoimhe Yes, exactly.

People who meet their online friends in person: Do you eventually start calling them by their real names or usernames if they have one that they use everywhere? I met one of my friends in person yesterday for the first time, and she ended up calling me Caoimhe (my online name) because that's just something we're extremely used to. Still, no matter how convenient that is, it feels kinda weird lol.

MS26,

@Caoimhe I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I actually never call people by their usernames unless I don't know their real one. To me it feels like I'm treating them less like a human being and more like just a face behind a screen unless they specifically tell me they prefer that name.

One of the things I hear most about being inaccessible are capchas so figured I'd share a tip. Some of them are just straight up images with no audio option and that sucks, but sometimes I've found they'll pop up a dialog at the very bottom of the page that you have to click on to get the challenge. I know I've been confused before because checking the box appears to do nothing unless you go to the bottom and see that dialog. Hopefully this helps someone somewhere.

Why did somebody have to tell me that the smell of fresh cut grass is actually a plant distress signal? Kinda ruins the peace of it.

You know you're from the desert when:
you hate when anybody wastes water in any way
You think anything below 60F is sweater weather
when it rains everyone around you either celebrates or worries

So when emailing someone regularly, like in a fairly long thread, do you stick to including greeting and closing lines every single time or drop it eventually? I've seen even very professional people start their messages off with their points after a while, but always worry about doing it myself for fear of seeming informal. At the same time, saying hello, hi, thank you over and over seems a little much especially if you're emailing at like a response every five minutes. Thoughts?

Who else likes #Skittles?

MS26,

@LaurenCeleste I actually didn't used to like them but now they're a great snack. I was a very picky child and didn't like some of the things that are my absolute favorite foods now like taco Bell, macaroni and cheese and spaghetti. Still I'd take M&Ms over skittles any day, and there are also flavors I like a lot more than others.

I'm sick for the third time in four months. I think this is absurd and I clearly need a more immune-boosting diet. So for this I consult the vast archives of mastodon knowledge. My issues are that 1: whenever I buy fresh produce it's way too much for me to get through on my own, like they only sell giant bags of celery or heads of lettuce. 2: I don't find it satisfying, I am always still hungry if I eat just a salad for lunch for example. 3: I don't think much of it has a taste, and if it does it's not a pleasant one. 4: I really don't like food-prep work and in order to make it taste good at least some of that is required. I've thought about using frozen vegetables to negate the issue of them going bad and mixing them with rice or soup and that's a great idea. Also those salad kits, the pre-made ones are okay. But does anyone have any other ideas? Particularly for fruit.

Finally got a Costco membership because Instacart integrates with it now. It brings the prices down significantly and I think I can easily make up the cost of the membership just by buying some of my usual items (or Costco equivalents). Does anyone else shop there? (Especially those who live alone but just have a lot of storage space.) I'm curious if I should be looking out for particularly good deals on anything.

MS26,

@simon Anything that doesn't go bad. Like canned stuff and toilet paper is great to get from there because you can buy it and forget it if you have the space. I don't know how prices compare to buying it in smaller amounts at other stores, but personally I really like knowing I'm set for a long time.

What's up with this weird connection between American colleges and protests?

This seems to be an exclusively American thing. We've had student protests in the past, but they were about extremely serious issues happening here and affecting those studennts' daily lives, not every single issue that is popular and trendy at the time, from the Vietnam War to BLM to Gaza.

This seems to be an exclusively AMerican phenomenon.

MS26,

@miki I think it's because America is so politically charged now, like unless I'm mistaken more so than most other countries because we've had such globally inflamatory elections and what not. People like to feel like they're helping somehow and a lot of people here feel helpless because they hate the politics so much. That's my take anyway, might not be valid at all.

MS26,

@miki It really did seem to take off in 2016. I think there was just something about Trump that really pissed everybody off and it spiraled from there. I mean maybe I was too young before that to understand the amount of unrest going on but after 2016 everyone hated Hillary too and then it was Trump this or Trump that. I also think it might have to do with how hard it is for people to get health care because mental health is so bad, which is probably also why we have so many mass shootings. Thirdly, America is way more individualistic than other countries who tend to have more of a sense of community while America prides themselves on indipendence. So it's a lot harder for us to ask for help for mental health and come together because we feel like we should be able to do it on our own. Put all that together and you have this.

MS26,

@x0 @miki Oh yeah I totally forgot about the news. They not only try to make people angry but scare them too and some people react to fear with anger. It keeps them popular, appeal to emotions is a timeless advertising campaign.

MS26,

@x0 @miki Yeah and I see it on both sides. A good deal of people straight up wish death on Trump and I think that's never okay.

I don't know about you, but when a TV show or movie makes a joke out of some device accidentally connecting to a speaker, the lack of realism takes me right out of the moment. It's hard enough to connect to some of them on purpose.

MS26,

@jscholes Hmm idk about that. I have several devices that do connect automatically, one of which is a speaker.

It is always so cold in doctor's offices, airplanes, restaurants and classrooms.

MS26,

@Caoimhe @miki But like this is absurd. I get it, it's hot outside, does that mean you have to have the AC on so high that it feels like freezing wind is blowing through the atmosphere? How about a nice middle ground?

MS26,

@Estrella @x0 @Caoimhe @miki I hate the heat but adoring the cold is also a bit far lol.

MS26,

@Caoimhe @Estrella @x0 @miki yes it is 100% better. But it's the best if neither hot nor cold.

New rule. It’s nothing personal, but if all you do is spout negativity, then I will take it upon myself to remove you from my feed. I am literally on the edge of actually flipping out.

MS26,

@evilcookies98 I feel like I too have seen an absurd amountof hostility and anger around today. I will never understand how people complain that there is too much unrest in the world and then add onto it with so much hate.

I just got a cut on my finger, broke a glass, and spilled boiled water — some of which landed on me — while making hot chocolate. Did I pass the clumsiness test? This day is certainly an adventure.

MS26,

@miki @Caoimhe What are your concerns? I swim pretty well, I don't know many complex strokes but I can stay above water just fine. I don't prefer to swim in crowded pools because yes that can be awkward, but otherwise I just make sure I don't run into the wall or whatever when moving. I can hear the sound change when an obstacle is near me and I have enough vision to see if something is in my way, just not any detail of what it is.

MS26,

@miki @Caoimhe Oh, yeah that is kind of a pain. I don't swim in pools that have lockers. Yes I take a cane inside the pool area, like if I'm at the pool at my apartment and search with it until I find chairs to put my stuff down on. I don't usually go by myself because I think it's borign to swim alone, and the friend that I would go with had a watch so he could ping his phone and we would find our stuff that way if we forgot where we left it.
