LordGeekington, to Tolkien

Surprised to learn in Fonstad’s Atlas of that is 21,400 square miles (55426 square km) — way larger than I was imagining! That would make it slightly smaller than West Virginia and larger than Switzerland. And that isn’t counting the later-added Westmarches or Buckland either.

LordGeekington,

@john Ahh! Also, probably much more walkable than the examples I was thinking of

LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird Aww. And thankfully, all has been forgiven!

Oh my lord, he shrinkwrapped himself.

Elliot O’Donnell’s THE GREY HORROR… not an easy yarn to find! This spooky tale of a funereal Lost Valley, a fathomless pit, and a gigantic glistening specter has been inexplicably regarded as — one topic of a recent @WideAtlanticWeird episode:

As the tale is quite obscure but, I feel, also enjoyable, I will re-tell it in a special thread. With annotations, of course!

Images of the #Chimpanzee #Ufiti that give off intense #cryptid vibes. This chimpanzee was apparently a captive individual released in Malawi, according to Benson (1968). Despite that conclusion, this primate still makes appearances in #Cryptozoology works.

Recorded something BIG with @WideAtlanticWeird and figured, better start a thread to back up some of my claims!

LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird Did Ivan T. Sanderson discuss eastern in the 1960’s? Yep! He discusses (very strange) reports from Southern Illinois, Kentucky, and Alabama in the 1968 edition (p. 124-127).

LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird I mis-stated how long Gigantopithecus and Orangutans diverged, it’s more like 10-12 million years ago instead of 8 (which I think I said?)

LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird I should have better explained the purported “True Giant” “footprint” “morphology” that Hall/Coleman/Huyghe claim — the four toes are even in size. And hey, managed to track down one source:

LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird Okay, just read the summary. 718 pages and three pseudo-primate marsupial cryptids!!!!??! Really wish it wasn’t so expensive!

LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird This reminds me — have you come across Philippe Coudray’s Cryptozoology book? It also has 3-4 Yowies, albeit they are sadly apes of some sort. Peculiar vibe to the book, definitely owes a ton to Heuvelmans. For some reason, the .pdf in English is available for free:

  • LordGeekington,

@idoubtit My in-laws have a neighbor who will literally do 8 hour shifts leaf-blowing on the weekend. Must be nice apparently having no problems or obligations!

@LordGeekington do you fancy talking about the work of Mark Hall?

    LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird YES!!! Things are a bit chaotic at the moment, but let’s make this happen!

@LordGeekington do you remember talking about a book with me a year ago, probably 80s or 90s, that had Mokele Mbembe illustrations in it? The animal being attacked by tribesmen, and coming across a pith helmeted-hunter

    LordGeekington,

@WideAtlanticWeird I believe so — was that also the one where it had an illustration of Sanderson’s encounter?

    LordGeekington, to UFOs

Somewhere out there is an alternate version of myself that’s really all about #UFOs

    LordGeekington, to Paranormal

One time, 22 Halloweens ago, I carved the menagerie onto a pumpkin with… limited success. I should probably re-attempt this one of these years!

  • LordGeekington,

@idoubtit @john They’re also quite bad about hyping up new species descriptions that, erm, are far from discoveries.

    LordGeekington,

@john @idoubtit And distinctive structure-making behavior H. sapiens is incapable of!
