Two things that drew me to Irish when I was young were the sound and the inscrutability (from the perspective of an English speaker). Learned this word this morning, and it really does nail both.
22 July 1595: Henry Ussher appointed Archbishop of #Armagh#otd.
He was consecrated the next day, a man described as being 'very perfect in the Irish language' (BM) #Gaeilge
I've been learning #Irish on #Duolingo and it's...fine I guess, but I realized that many years ago, when I was 16 or 17, my mum got me a little pocket Irish dictionary to encourage my interest, now hiding deep in my bookshelves.
So I flipped to a random page, and today's word is "ainriochtach" - dilapidated.
