Current status: Actions for Obsidian 1.3 is waiting for App Store Review 😅
I'll spend the rest of the day/week working on the long-form "What's New in 1.3" forum post, and the short-form newsletter. And the rest of the documentation of course.
I'm seriously considering taking a few weeks off soon, I can't remember the last time I didn’t work for more than 2 or 3 days. Need to pace myself.
Actions for Obsidian 1.3 is basically right around the corner, and brings support for executing Obsidian commands — that's right, run everything your vault’s command palette offers right from Shortcuts!
Happy to announce that Actions For Obsidian 1.3.0 is finally in private TestFlight, phew!
I could use a few more eyeballs and opinions, so if you're a current AFO user and feel like helping me out here, please let me know and I will set you up.
New in 1.3:
New vault handling
Support for the "other” Periodic Notes (Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly)
People, I’d like to start running small-scale #TestFlight.s before each #ActionsForObsidian release, and I’m looking for 10-20 active people who are willing and able to put a new release candidate through its paces before I push it into the App Store — this includes giving feedback and honest opinions, as well as filing bug reports.
I’d be delighted if you're interested but please read the requirements first ↓ 😉
Long, exhausting day but a good one. I solved the final puzzle on the road to Actions for Obsidian 1.3 — I found a way to make working with vaults much nicer while maintaining backwards compatibility (i.e., while not breaking your existing workflows).
Pretty happy with how the new version is shaping up. Now it’s time for some Star Wars!
#iCloud Drive is great 95% of the time, the other 5% it’s simply infuriating. Hangs (“1 item, 8 kB left, LOL” for hours), stalls, randomly unsync’d files… I pay for the 200GB plan, mostly for Photos sync/storage, but even those €3/month are a hard sell at that point.
There’s not a lot going on yet at the ActionsDotWork Forum but I dig it quite a bit already. My experience is right: the format (message board) lends itself to better discussions. It’s like people sharing a ride on a long trip, having interesting conversation.
Discord/Slack is nice and all but it’s more like people on a bus shouting at each other during short hops. Friendly, sure, but shouting.
How to set up a "project folder blueprint”: Let’s say you have a certain way you set up your project folders, and you want a “project blueprint” so you don’t have to manually create that particular folder structure again and again.
I’m still swamped with setting up the new actionsdotwork forum and all that it entails (including privacy/GDPR stuff etc.), so here’s just a quick heads-up:
A potential customer asked for my app’s privacy policy, when I pointed them to https://obsidian.actions.work/privacy they replied with “thanks, but I’m not going to read 9000 words”, so I added a TL;DR section to the top — 4 sentences of plain language. HTH!
New feature in the upcoming Actions for Obsidian 1.2.0: applying a template on note creation. The functionality itself is done, I'm currently working on the UI, and I think this ↓↓↓ is good. Because it'll be an integral part of the action, I've decided to put it front and center, as opposed to the "Strategy for dealing with an existing note" which is merely a modifier of sorts.
w00p, it's App Store Connect pay day! 💶 I'm not making heaps of money w/ Actions for Obsidian but it's a good start, and 15% of all proceeds go into sponsoring the open-source projects who made it possible/ easier for me to build that app.
And that's €120 one-time spent on sponsoring several #FOSS devs & projects! 🚀 Feels strangely satisfying… (That's based on the revenue received so far over the last few months.)
I've decided to go with a per-month-and-app approach. I separate the sponsorships by app: AfO uses these libraries/projects, App #2 uses those, and both apps generate different amounts of revenue. 15% of their revenues are used for #sponsorship, but separately - I think this is a fair model.
Currently implementing #Omnisearch support in Actions for Obsidian 1.2. I'm torn between adding a toggle in the existing "Search Notes" action ("Search with Omnisearch" on/off) and an entirely new action "Search Notes with Omnisearch".
#ObsidianMD#ShortcutsApp gang: I contemplate opening a Discourse message board (not a Discord!) as a place for people to discuss Actions for Obsidian and my upcoming, Shortcuts-related apps, and for helping each other out.
Would you use that?
I've asked the #Obsidian (company) if it was possible to carve out a niche on the official forum but neither a new category nor a #ActionsForObsidian hashtag are on the menu, I'm afraid. It is understandable, and I'm fine with their answer, mind.
NEW VIDEO 🎉 Today I will show you how to turn those note-to-self emails into #Obsidian notes, locally, using your existing email account. All you need for that is the built-in #macOS Mail app (set up with your email account) as well as Actions for Obsidian.
> I love me some #Obsidian, but one of Obsidian's weak spots has always been it's Shortcuts support (or lack thereof). That's where Actions for Obsidian comes in.
It’s already a bit outdated, what with the iOS version being available by now. 😅 Still: thanks, Mike!
Earlier this month, I was invited to speak at the Nick Milo's #LinkingYourThinkingConference. In my session (~50 mins) I gave an introduction to the Apple #ShortcutsApp automation system and how #Obsidian can benefit from being a part of it.
I've showcased #ActionsForObsidian, and built a few short workflows to give the audience ideas for how to connect the apps they already use, to their #ObsidianMD vaults.
I'll give an intro to the Apple Shortcuts automation system and how #Obsidian can benefit from being a part of it.
I will showcase my app #ActionsForObsidian, which brings the two together, and build a few short workflows to give you ideas for how to connect your existing Mac and iOS apps to your Obsidian vault.
I'll demonstrate how to convert a single CSV file into separate, interlinked Obsidian notes on #macOS using the built-in #ShortcutsApp, #ActionsForObsidian, and developer @sindresorhus'es excellent app Actions (no relation). The example data is a Goodreads book export, and the result is a lot of nerdy fun.
