The sad state of my quest for a Usenet NNTP GUI client for Linux.

Pan is awesome but the binaries of my Debian Bullseye based distro, Crostini, are ancient and buggy. The Pan project distributes no .deb or other packages. Building from source requires recent versions of tools not in Bullseye.

Very few other GUI options available. Even fewer with .deb or other binaries.

I'm checking out Thunderbird as an NNTP client.

I can't figure how to set up the username and password of my account for the NNTP server and the passowrd of my email account for the outgoing SMTP server. It's not clear whether it's even possible.

@amoroso How's the state of usenet nowadays? I though It has only piracy binaries and the rest was spam..

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@dani I don't know about Usenet in general. I follow just a handful of groups where there's still some activity and interesting conversations, and spam is under control.

After hours of trial and error I finally configured Thunderbird to access the Eternal September NNTP server.

After crashing badly, Thunderbird no longer starts on my Crostini Linux and is unusable.

Back to the drawing board, I'm still loking for an NNTP GUI client for Linux.

@amoroso that's a shame. Did you have a backup from before it worked?

amoroso,

@gpowerf The crash had luckily no major consequences. I started using Thunderbird yesterday and subscribed to just a couple of groups so far.

@amoroso Emacs. ;-)

@tux0r I loved Emacs but I'd like to put my Emacs days behind.

@amoroso have you tried https://sabnzbd.org/ ? I'd heard positive things about it when I asked at some point

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@tfb Thanks but it seems to only allow downloading binaries, not reading text articles.

I may have found a reliable NNTP GUI client for Linux, Claws Mail:

https://www.claws-mail.org

It's lightweight, stable, fast, feature rich, and available in Debian.

The only confusing aspect is it requires to configure an email account even if I already configured an outgoing SMTP server in the NNTP account.

@amoroso Emacs has rcirc and Eric, maybe one of those suits you

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@mattof Thanks but I'd actually like a GUI tool.

amszmidt,

@amoroso Hate to say it, but GNUS?

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@amszmidt Last time I checked it didn't qualify as GUI 😀

arjen,
@arjen@idf.social avatar

@amoroso did you consider Emacs?

See this link for using Gnus to read NNTP:

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@arjen I used Gnus several years ago and loved it, but now I want a GUI tool.

@amoroso

Have you tried Thunderbird?

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@jchaven That's next on my list.

But I'd prefer to use my own email client, Gmail, instead of Thunderbird for email replies. Pan supports it nicely via xdg-email.

jchaven,
@jchaven@social.sdf.org avatar

@amoroso

I meant just for Usenet.

Edit: Nevermind. I mis-read your concern. Valid point.

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@jchaven Maybe I can configure just the SMTP server in Thunderbird and leave out POP3/IMAP.
