Today I learned that the majority of road signs use either Highway Gothic or Clearview sans serif font.

@adamsdesk The kicker about Clearview is that the research was fudged a little bit, in that they compared NEW Clearview signs with old, worn Highway Gothic signs and then said Clearview was more legible. In recent studies, that's not as conclusive. Most DOTs are moving away from Clearview because the benefits are negligible at best, and there's a licensing cost to use it.

@machias Well that's not good. What does DOTs mean? Sounds like a very interesting subject to study.

@adamsdesk Department of Transportation. Texas (TxDOT) and Pennsylvania (PennDOT) were leaders in the Clearview studies. Michigan (MDOT) has really embraced Clearview. Arizona (ADOT) did at one time, but they've moved away, as have many other states.

@machias Thanks for the explanation.

@adamsdesk @machias
DOTs: Departments of Transport

@bjb Ah, I was thinking something like that. Thanks for the confirmation. @machias
