teacs, in D4 made me a fan of the ARPG genre, but POE is incredible.

Yeah PoE scratches the itch for me every new league. Can’t wait for PoE 2 and a revamp to leveling. D4 could be practically the best game ever but it feels weird to spend $70 on it when PoE is free

Noooberino, in Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators From Subreddits Continuing Blackouts

I am strongly for not opening up again and instead try to migrate to an open solution like this instance. people complaining about missing features and whatsoever will always exist...

zanics,

i hope you understand the point of the community is the community, and not the platform it is on

erreconerre,

You agree that the community can move on to another platform, then?

toxic,

I definitely think he made the case for using this platform if the platform doesn’t matter.

What's everyone thinking about the split of the clients and the release date?

Almost feels like they can try something new as the 10 year promise has been fulfilled, but decided to make another PoE. Seems like a big opportunity to rework the game entirely.

Man I am so hyped for the livestream!!

coffeetest, in D4 made me a fan of the ARPG genre, but POE is incredible.

I have played a lot of POE for a long period of time. The past year or so I have been less engaged with it. I picked up D4 on release. I have maybe 100 hours in and I am finding it a little dull. I do not dislike it but I also can't get that excited about it. Items seem boring to me and I can't believe it doesn't have a loot filter. Having to use your "bad skill" so you can use your "good skill" design is weird. I guess it's a different way to handle resources management but it really doesn't feel satisfying. POE skills in contrast are beautiful.

Anyway, I could go on but the bottom line is I am looking forward to the next POE league. We'll see what happens with D4 and I am glad to have another decent game to play but I'm 10x more excited thinking about POE builds than D4.

Nettle, in Earnest Discussion: It has been 3 days and there is virtually no activity here.

I just made an account here in case I ever need to use it. I was hoping that settings would allow me to change some things to make this site look better (like smaller text!) but all I was able to really do is switch from light mode to dark mode. It doesn't feel like a great replacement just yet...

Not gonna lie, I don't envy the position the mod team of /r/pathofexile is in right now.
Some users (understandably) don't give a fuck at all about the protest. They simply want their gaming subreddit and don't see or care about any impact reddit's recent actions might have on the future of the website.
Other users already jumping ship and are now pushing for any Fediverse alternative, while criticizing everyone who stops protesting (which is frustrating that it happened).
And then from a company standpoint, this entire debacle is undesirable. /r/pathofexile was founded by Chris himself, and has been a great marketing tool for the game. Especially with PoE2 marketing starting, it's not really desirable to have your outreach reduced like this. Because even if reddit is run into the ground by some maniacal CEO, this descent won't be immediate. For the foreseeable future I assume reddit will still have a certain reach for people who are not as terminally online as we are.

I find myself in the "already abandoned ship" camp, and I would like to see as big of an ongoing protest as possible, but if that doesn't happen I can understand why. Big respect to any mod who already threw in the towel and stepped down, I don't think that decision is bad.
Hope this community grows to become a valid alternative :)

coffeetest,

I'm a long-time POE player and followed /r/poe for quite a good chunk of that. I found the sub as a whole quite a mixed blessing. Early on, the excitement for new leagues and patch notes was really cool to be part of. As time went on, it was less and less fun for good reasons and bad. Up till APIcalypse I still checked in on it regularly. It contributed to me sticking with POE longer but also in finding faults with POE/GGG that the sub amplified and perhaps even out of proportion, don't know exactly.

I personally think GGG should do much more to build and cultivate its own community and replace its antiquated forums. Dev streams, better moderation, better community management. I am sure dealing with the raw community is a major headache and challenge but it didn't seem to be they tried that much.... or did they, really?

I appreciate the time and effort mods and community put into the Reddit sub being what it was but at this point, Reddit is dead to me. I don't trust corporate-owned social media, I won't contribute to it and I am opposed to even visiting it. I see Reddit as a sinking ship with the current CEO running, so I am not sure what I would do if I had any say but I would not be investing anything more into it.

RealM,

You raise a very valid point - I agree that GGG should try to promote more community interactions.

As an example, I always love to look at Digital Extrems, the developers behind Warframe. They host livestreams where they devs themselves explain in what direction they want to take the game, community managers livestream weekly and play with the community for 1~2 hours, and it is really nice to see them engaging with the game. Yes, the Warframe subreddit can still be toxic, but you do notice that the playerbase is more chill and "sees" the people behind the game a bit more.

For GGG, I feel like they got burnt by toxicity on reddit and now permanently wear the mask of the "CommunityTeam" Reddit account. Any official PoE livestreams are reservered for Trailers only, we don't even really know who the "CommunityTeam" is except for maybe Bex, and their own forums feel like a relic of the past, where they occasionally post screenshots of peoples hideouts.

Maybe the kind of community interactions I'd like to see do not work in such a single-player heavy focused game (as opposed to the Warframe example, which is built for group play) but personally I'd like to see a bit more community focus.

coffeetest,

I don't know the Warframe example but I've seen some parts of Last Epoch streams and I did wonder why I don't see something like that from GGG. But I agree that GGG seemed to OD'ed on Reddit toxicity and never really came back from it. Which was sad from my point of view. On a personal level, I get it, from an operation of GGG's size however it seems like a major missed opportunity. I get the feeling that they are thinking POE1/Reddit as their past and POE2 will bring in a whole new group of players and that past won't be so relevant. Maybe it is a good move.

I have been highly annoyed by GGG and POE over the years but I really want to see them succeed and bring back more of that magic. I'm old and I've played video games from the start. POE at its best is easily one of the best gaming experiences there have been for me.

If reddit magically goes back and fixes it's API issues, will this instance stay supported? Same question, but if the subreddit opens up (with NSFW or as normal?). Hoping the answer is yes, but wasn't sure what the plan was there.

I'm also not sure how technically this all works. For instance, I'm reading this on kbin, but obviously you guys have your own instance that is federated on pathofexile-discuss.... but what happens to the content if your instance goes down (or in the opposite direction, say it got so popular you couldn't afford to keep it up?).

Sorry for 20 questions! Trying to learn more in both cases while supporting the effort.

multiplicitypoe, (edited )

I plan to keep it up. It does cost a decent bit every month, but with Cloudflare caching most requests, it's not too bad. The place I need more help from is moderators that are familiar with the fediverse and PoE, currently it's just me This community is really cool, so it's really just banning bots or people coming here to post rude stuff and then leave.

If this instance goes down, I believe any content kbin or other sites have mirrored stays up, but new posts wouldn't be visible

If it costs too much I'll set up a Patreon or something, I already have a private one that covers maybe 80% of discord bot costs, but I don't post it anywhere because I don't want to ever profit off of this

What happened?

PoE’s sub being one of the first to immediately setup their own lemmy server was one of the biggest badass sub moves of the entire thing.

Was this a community decision or a Reddit one?

And can we continue to expect your awesome support of the community on the federated servers?

Seriously, I’ve learned more about the game from the Reddit sub than the actual game. I think we all have. It would be incredible to see it continue away from such a corrupting influence like Reddit.

multiplicitypoe,

I assume by your decision question you're asking about the sub reopening? If that's the case, reddit is forcing subreddits open. Although some of the core mod team is resigning, we felt it'd be better to ease the new mods in with help, rather than have reddit fully replace the team and get random users.

As for the instance, it will be staying up! I'll try to keep poereddit.com up as well to mirror posts, but with reddit's API changes it will likely need to remain historical, through March 31st 2023.

So is marking the sub nsfw a viable option? It seems like Reddit is pushing back on that.

Have you considered the move r/politicalhumor made by giving everyone (limited) mod powers?

What are your thoughts on Captain Lance’s video?

multiplicitypoe, (edited )

So is marking the sub nsfw a viable option? It seems like Reddit is pushing back on that.

Reddit is pushing back, but from talking to other mods in the mod coord, the only ones who have been fully demodded are ones that allowed explicit content. Just marking as NSFW seems okay, the linux subreddits have all done that. PoE even has good justification for going NSFW, the game is rated M for nudity, gore, violence, etc, and the subreddit does use profanity in about 25-30% of all posts (I checked via the poereddit.com database)

So, if the community wants it, I expect we'll do it unless something changes

Have you considered the move r/politicalhumor made by giving everyone (limited) mod powers?

I hadn't heard about it until you saw it, looking at it now huh, that's pretty interesting. I worry about the users who post every day but generally expose lightly-toxic behavior abusing this. I suppose it's only temporary though. Will keep an eye on it

What are your thoughts on Captain Lance’s video?

I saw that and I regret that we didn't make our poll 1) more simple and 2) more clear about what 'nsfw' means. Those were communication failures on our part. It was an honest mistake, but we should've caught it.

Skray,

From what I understand they cannot run ads on NSFW subs, I would fully expect pushback from the admins on that. If not now, then in the future.

multiplicitypoe,

Yep. We expect it too. If the community chooses to continue to keep the subreddit NSFW (we'll re-poll every now and then), we'll push back on the admins about it. That said if they toggle the subreddit to non-nsfw and lock it that way, we'll just have to tell the community it's not possible

D3mon, in The Tremendously Improved Path of Exile 2 Boss Design

I can't help but wonder how they're going to manage such intricate and engaging boss fights with the massive variance in player power you can get from gear alone. Not even accounting for different builds, I'm super curious to see how they've approached this problem.

joonazan,

Probably same solution as currently.

Players could absolutely delete bosses but they usually don't because that level of damage doesn't make progressing through the story any faster. My only character with that kind of damage early on was Hexblast. It was extremely fun but slow leveling, as the cast time is pretty massive.

Weaker players will struggle until they learn to build a certain level of damage. The bosses just have to be tuned so that it is possible to salvage a garbage build without knowing every single game mechanic. The tuning is currently pretty lenient, as I can make up builds on the fly that demolish Ruthless even though non-ruthless characters get at least 300% more damage for free.

TalkativeTri, in Unique Design Process Stories Roundup - Part 1

What an excellent quote from a dev back in 2015:

If someone asked me what Path of Exile's greatest strength was, I'd answer with just one word: depth. The breadth of choice and volume of interesting interactions between skills, supports, passives and items are what differentiates Path of Exile from other games, and what keeps players coming back over and over again. Path of Exile's greatest weakness, on the other hand? Complexity.>

Even now, I completely agree. They know it's the reason their game is great and the reason it is niche.

TalkativeTri, in Path of Exile 2 Speculation: Where Every Act Will Go

Very curious to see what others think about this.

Someone in the comments pointed out we'll also go to Oriath for one reason or another as we saw Kitava's overgrown skull in the initial PoE 2 trailer. Perhaps we'll stop by the island on our way to Ngamakanui!

Skray, (edited )

I'm definitely curious if we'll return to old areas.

It would be fun to have some recurring memes in the new campaign too, a new Dread Thicket, a golden hand and some eyes.

I do wish PoE had something similar to the secret cow level in Diablo, it's been fun watching everyone theory craft and trying to find the new secret in D4.

Marc, in Unique Design Process Stories Roundup - Part 1

Anyone think this post is relating to the limited unique items available in D4 now?

I do appreciate the post in itself, slowly building up the hype for the exilecon livestream.

Skray,

It might be but they've been doing a lot of these round ups lately. I think it's partly a way of recapping their history as they get ready for PoE2 and partly for marketing, since there really isn't much going on.

I do wish they would trickle feed more PoE2 info, but it seems they're saving it all for Exilecon.
