🇨🇦 MSM leading us down the same path as the US by amplifying the dangerous rhetoric of opposition leader Pierre Poilievre

“It will be common sense. No more woke. We will celebrate our history, we will restore freedom of speech, we will allow people to be proud again, we will honour our traditions and treat our citizens with respect. (In relation to the military) we’re going to end the woke culture and
👉 we’re going to bring back a warrior culture.”

@Snowshadow What should be done to oppose Poilievre?

What did you think of this?:

Defying prevailing opinion among a substantial section of Canadian big business, the Opposition Conservative Party, led by the far-right MP Pierre Poilievre, joined in giving unanimous consent to a union-backed, Liberal-NDP sponsored anti-scab bill on its second reading in Parliament on Feb. 27.

What you fail to comprehend is though Canadian law is set up to view our country in a more socially-minded way, we are not all out pro socialism or communism.

And looking at your profile, the first thing I noticed is you are against the war against Russia. so I was correct in my assessment.

YOU are PRO-RUSSIA

Blocked now, thank you.

The problem is, even if they disagree with where conservatives are going with this, a lot of people resonate with some of the individual points.

> We will celebrate our history

I don't know about "celebrate", but certainly face it, rather than destroying the evidence in the name of sensitivity.

> we will restore freedom of speech

As the new govt in NZ shows, conservatives don't actually care about free expression once in power, but...

@Snowshadow
My point is that when conservatives appropriate "free speech", for example, we can't fight that by repudiating it, as I've seen so many "liberals" doing over the last decade or so. We need to uphold freedom of expression, and point out all the ways conservatives disregard it once in power, despite the lip service paid. Otherwise we're playing right into their hands.

@Snowshadow
The ultra-conservative strategy is to build support for authoritarianism by accusing opponents of being authoritarian; ie political gaslighting. When we react to their "free speech" rhetoric by arguing against freedom of expression, or even failing to defend it, this alienates people who care (as we should) about freedom of expression. It strengthens their position and brings more people into their orbit.

@strypey I am aware of that, however, disregarding their outright lies and the media not fact checking their nonsense is playing into their hands and furthering their message. Too many people think, "I saw it on the news so it must be true".

> Too many people think, "I saw it on the news so it must be true"

This was one of the problems Indymedia set out to solve. Now I see the opposite problem, people thinking 'if it's on the news it's not true'. This is one reason many who I would otherwise expect to be furious about climate change, listen to propagandists whose job is to muddy the waters.

It's good to question the news, to be aware of the filters Herman & Chomsky talk about in Manufacturing Consent, and so on. But knee-jerk contrarianism is just as predictable and easy for authoritarians to manipulate as blind conformity.

Either way, I don't think the news is the main problem driving creeping authoritarianism.
