Anything that runs two-stroke or has more than one cylinder, a tachometer is definitely useful.

But riding something like a DR650SE big ol single cylinder I don't miss the tach' while thumping along. It's very plain where the (nice) torque plateaus, and single cyl torque is forgiving all the way up the gears. That stated, I still wouldn't mind a tach' when riding one.
