TheQuinbox,

What Braille displays (preferably 32 cells or above) would people recommend for use with NVDA? Price doesn't matter, I'm going to get the rehab agency to pay for it because I really need a display for my math, but I can't do it with my current, 14-cell display. #Braille #Math #Blindness

sapphireangel,

@TheQuinbox the BI 40 or focus are probably your best bets.

TheQuinbox,

@sapphireangel I’ve heard awful things about the focus thus far, so am really learning towards either a BI 40X or an Orbit Slate.

Also oops, didn’t mean to boost that. Undone now.

sapphireangel,

@TheQuinbox Yeah the focuses aren't as good as they once were. I have a BI 20 x and I like it better than the old focus blue I used to have.

@TheQuinbox Thats probably a question of availability as well. We've got alot of really good manufacturers here in Germany with exceptionally well made and designed braille displays, but just a bare minimum of those get exported to the US.

soundshadow87,

@TheQuinbox A lot of folks are really liking the Brailliant BI40X.

ricky_enger,

@TheQuinbox You will get as many recommendations as there are people. Think about what you care about, other than it should display braille, because I mean they all do that well enough to get by on. Do you prefer a Braille or qwerty input? Do you want speech on it too? How noisy can refreshing of cells be? How much space can it take up in a bag? Have you ever felt braille output on someone else's display that you either like or hate? Might help you narrow down choices a bit.

jpellis2008,

@TheQuinbox One more. These are the ones with the sensor at the end of the right side that auto scrolls as you read. However they have basic models with no keyboard that sound great as well. The basic 64 is the exact length of a desktop keyboard. https://www.dvg-llc.com/shop

alexhall,

@jpellis2008 @TheQuinbox Those basic models are making me drool. I was saying a few weeks ago that I want a display with no keyboard or extra features. Just the braille. That's what these are. At a tenth the price, I'd already be ordering one. I'm jealous of Quinn's access to school funding. I miss those days.

TheQuinbox,

@alexhall @jpellis2008 Oh my god yeah I want one. The reason I’m not going for a mantis is because it has a giant ass keyboard that makes the device massive. This solves that. *dies

gallagher123123,

@TheQuinbox I would absolutely recommend The Brailliant BI40X. I have the 20X and love it!!! It’s so stable and Connects very quickly via Bluetooth.

jpellis2008,

@TheQuinbox Personally I'd stay away from the freedom scientific focus anything, friend of mine had 2 broken 4th gen units over 2 years, buttons falling off, cells going bad ETC. I've heard fifth gen isn't much better.

jpellis2008,

@TheQuinbox QBraille XL is quite large, I regret picking it up. The braille keyboard surrounded by basically every qwerty key you'd ever need is cool but I just don't have room for it, it's reallly meant to be used with a desktop. I'm a fan of the humanware brailliant, I have the 20, has some TTS like a Braille N Speak, decent case actually comes with it, keyboard isn't the worst I've seen and it just works well.

bryansmart,

@TheQuinbox @devinprater Handytech is the best you can buy. Concave cells with rounded dots, touch sensitive, Bluetooth and USB, built-in note taker.

devinprater,

@bryansmart @TheQuinbox Yeah, really expensive though, and feels fragile to me.

glaroc,

@TheQuinbox I am using the QBraille XL and I love the way it feels to use, its a little bit older and not as robust as some of the other ones, but its great at least to me anyway.

Brynify,

@TheQuinbox Hmmm. Mantis? Brailliant? That new one from Help Tech?

@TheQuinbox Humanware. Brailliant bi40x as some recommend. The thumb keys are wonderful. I know they're just glorified advance bars but their positioning is, I think, unique to Humanware.

silverleaf57,

@TheQuinbox Focus 40

@TheQuinbox mantis

ivan_soto,

@TheQuinbox Wow I thought my 20 cell display was bad. I think the smallest display I've ever seen was 18 cells

dhamlinmusic,

@TheQuinbox I’m a fan of the #OrbitResearch #BrailleDisplays so I would suggest the #orbitreader40

@TheQuinbox Good luck with the Math. I don't envy you to be honest.
