dannoffs, in COSMIC Pre-Alpha is Incredible

Looks neat but since KDE 5 got good I’ve just never felt compelled to try any other DEs. This just seems like more unnecessary fracturing of effort.

hello_hello,

That’s valid, all the work that goes into cosmic also goes into the Rust application stack as well, so people are passively benefiting from this as well.

Plus there are only 2 Wayland desktop environments, the big 2 have to be challenged sometime.

2025 will be the year of the Enlightenment desktop.

Reminds me of all the chuds getting banned when projects started adding codes of conduct like 10 years ago

hello_hello, in Any recommendations for essential, useful, fun command line/terminal programs?

You can use fish or nushell if you really want to use something other than bash. Bash is useful because it’s installed in virtually all GNU/Linux machines by default. So unless you live in your terminal prompt 24/7 you dont need to change.

Zellij over tmux.

Best text editor is the one you like using and receives constant updates (and libre).

Make sure you start learning Nix Flakes as soon as possible if you want the most out of NixOS. The documentation is quite verbose so that’s what I’d prioritize.

davel, in FreeTube - The Private YouTube Client
@davel@hexbear.net avatar

I don’t begrudge these YouTube straw-hat-pirates projects at all, but ultimately we’ve got to get independent of Google somehow. PeerTube seems like a good direction, but people making a buck from YouTube aren’t likely to just up and move there. Video production is a lot of labor.

Bcachefs

isaac-pog

It is getting close to time for me to retire my current computer. The CPU and chipset is >10 years old at this point, I am at the RAM limit, and it is the best CPU available for the chipset and socket of my motherboard. On my current system, I use Btrfs on top of a cached LVM logical volume which uses 1TB of NVMe SSD storage to provide writethrough caching for a 6TB hard disk drive. It is a rather convoluted setup, but it is a nice compromise between having limited fast storage and tons of slow storage, and saves me from juggling files back and forth between different filesystems for performance reasons. I might just opt for bcachefs instead when I put the new machine together.
