Listening to the boracity response to THAT NYT podcast. As usual she's very good, and I'm annoyed at the NYT all over again. Like podcast dude and weird guest .. shut up!
Thank you, boracity. I had the same icky feelings about that dumb podcast, but she's so much more articulate about what's going on. And the penny didn't drop for me about the xenophobic overtones.
BTW, I never listened to the original pod, I just read the transcript. It's like 20x more annoying listening to it!! Even the tiny excerpts boracity cited were making me cringe. "Pop pop pop pop." WTF even? 🤮

I am probably a little more critical of BTS/Hybe than she is sometimes and I don't always agree with her 'BTS has transcended Kpop' thing, but she nails it on the xenophobic overtones from podcast guy and his friend for sure!
As you know, "They got popular and now they SUCK" is the oldest fandom trope there is. But it hits a little differently when you say "These Korean guys got popular in the US, and now they SUCK." That didn't occur to me, so I'm glad you shared the video!
I'm also puzzled by anon's contention that BTS's English language singles were a HYBE's plot to make a lot of money. My understanding is you don't really make money from streaming, you make money from tours.
@tikistitch Absolutely this. As a naive, emo kid I was guilty of it. And then I discovered punk .. and later KPop and learnt to look for the joy. But the race-based element is extra gross.
@tikistitch Re: streaming and the idea that they sold out on english lyric tracks because Hybe needed the money - yeah not buying that either. They make a not insignificant amount out of streams, and we can't deny that Hybe marketing are pretty good at taking all our money and tours and merch are the bigger earners.
@tikistitch I do agree tho, that Hybe made some strategic, aggressive decisions to break thru in western markets with those tracks. Just like lots of other labels/groups do all the time, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, I agree about the Grammy, that's my hunch as well. But I don't have any evidence, just as Anon doesn't have evidence that it was a cash grab. I'm wondering why the host didn't push back on Anon more? I mean, it's the freaking NY Times, the Paper of Record. meh
@tikistitch Because he's as bad as anon with the xenophobic opinions and (to quote the thread with @JillsJoy and @glitchontwitch) his 'it wasn't on the alternative rock station a dude listened to in the 90s, then it must suck' vibe.
The 'Im a western music commentary guy and I'm so superior' vibe is real. 🤢
