Worth finding 1.40 minutes to watch this one. Some interesting numbers from Alan Kohler

Time to free up those family homes

@HardBeingGreen the million plus empty houses is a concern but I can't agree at all with the idea that two people in a 4 bedroom home is part of the problem. Governments have failed to build enough government housing and are still underperforming.

@smitjo @HardBeingGreen Here in Canberra (and probably elsewhere) it's very hard to downsize without moving way out into the burbs, partly because of cost, but also because any new infill housing is all 2- storeys. Many retired friends have therefore either been forced to stay in their big houses, move far away, or build a tiny single level dual occ on their own property. This obsession our govt has with cramming 2 storeys onto tiny blocks (rates $$) is not helping old ppl downsize.

@sister_ratched @smitjo downsizing definitely needs to become easier

Up this way a lot of people are selling up in Sydney and moving to Newcastle and the like. I get it can be hard to move away from where you raised your family but it should be encouraged OR as Jude is suggesting, give people suitable local alternatives

@HardBeingGreen @sister_ratched if people are ready to downsize then that move should be made an easy and inexpensive one but hounding empty nesters out of their family home before they're ready causes unnecessary grief and only puts off solving the housing shortage problem. Eventually old folk will die and their house becomes available for another family.

@smitjo @sister_ratched

I'm not talking compulsory acquisition just offering incentives to make it easier

smitjo,

@HardBeingGreen @sister_ratched yep, I agree with you. It was the Alan Kohler comment about 4 bedroom houses with only two people "rattling around" in them that bothered me.

sister_ratched,
@sister_ratched@toot.community avatar

@smitjo @HardBeingGreen Yes, disturbing.

@smitjo @HardBeingGreen Yes, I applaud them for that. They are wedded to Barr in the ACT though.

@sister_ratched @HardBeingGreen we definitely need more Greens in the Labor/Green government in the ACT. A minority Federal Government that is reliant on Greens support would be good too.

@smitjo @sister_ratched @HardBeingGreen more Greens in the ACT assembly and in cabinet over the last four years have really achieved very little, particularly on housing!

smitjo,
@smitjo@mastodon.au avatar

@luciedigitalni @sister_ratched @HardBeingGreen Agreed and much of what has been done seems based more on developer's needs rather than citizen's needs. We need the Greens to be the senior partner in government.

@smitjo @sister_ratched @HardBeingGreen i think what we need is a strong crossbench
