abhijith,

There is this news floating around - "Asians are less ‘humane’ – Ukrainian security chief" where he says Russians are North Asians and thus less humane. For me personally the anger at being calles inhuman is infinitesmally less than the joy of someone acknowledging North Asia exists. 🤣 Everyone talks about South Asia, South East Asia and "Middle East" Asia but never about North Asia or West Asia. We have one direction reclaimed friends. Let us fight to let every call Middle East Asia what it actually is - West Asia. 🤣 Our Asia is not some freak continent without North and West.

@abhijith Huh. Are they even aware of the blatant racism??

testing, (edited )

@liztai of course they are! eastern europe is full of racism, and politicians often employ it tactically > that said, anti-asian racism is widespread in eastern europe, often aimed at people from former soviet republics in central asia (kazakhstan, uzbekistan, tajikistan, kyrgyzstan, turkmenistan), but also aimed asian indigenous people from siberia etc ...

also the koryo-saram, the north korean minority spread all over the former soviet union faces racism until today, though to a considerably lesser degree than some decades ago

@testing @abhijith Sad, and they seem so unaware of it. Or perhaps they are and just celebrate it.

abhijith,

@liztai @testing True. I read these English ones - The Gaudian, Reuters, BBC, RT, The Hindu(India), Dawn(Pakistan). I also appreciate NY Times covering about the rise of fascist Indian party BJP in the US but I don't have supscription. If you haven't visited Dawn's website do have a look. It has zero distractions. Not sure how they manage to keep it that way.

@abhijith @testing @liztai I love the fact how BJP fascism supporters also have been at the forefront of supporting anti-muslim and anti-immigration policies worldwide, like in the UK, or ending affirmative action in the US,

completely oblivious to how these racisms also include THEM.

Some of them even outright support Hitler and Nazi ideology cause "he championed Aryans" and "we are Aryans too"!

Full denial about how Nazis DONT consider brown people human!

😂

abhijith,

@SiR_GameZaloT @testing @liztai These things are not straightforward.

  1. They have allies among neonazis in every country and they see benefit in using BJP and their propaganda machine to influence voters of Indian diaspora.
  2. The immigrants they are trying to keep away does not include them. Most of their supporters are upper caste Hindus who have the means to study in top universities abroad and eventually become residents. They want to stop people of economically backward classes from getting opportunities for blue collar jobs abroad so that their children may get a brighter future.
SiR_GameZaloT,
@SiR_GameZaloT@paktodon.asia avatar

@abhijith @testing @liztai so stuff like class solidarity and casteism?
Intersectional Racism, who'd have thought XD

Makes sense waise. We have similar strands here in #Pakistan, but its too small to bother for now.

Instead our extremists fell for Nazi propaganda and introduced #transphobia into our society. Almost overnight we have gone from being one of the more progressive Asian countries on Trans rights, to trans witchunts.

Half the Trans equality laws have been gutted this year alone.

SiR_GameZaloT,
@SiR_GameZaloT@paktodon.asia avatar

@abhijith @testing @liztai why I say our extremists "fell for",

Because, ironically, most of our progressive trans rights were pushed for and enacted by our most #rightwing religious parties

They might hate women and #feminism, but these guys literally championed trans rights over decades

And then the western trans rights #CultureWar hit their phones last year, and overnight they went from protectors to persecutors

The #Trans community here is still in shock and disbelief about it all

abhijith,

@SiR_GameZaloT @testing @liztai Similar thing happened in India but was less dramatic. BJP tried to reach out to LGBTQ+ community but when the issue of marriage came up suddenly they are like marriage is holy... Hindu gods... conservative society.... blah blah blah.

@liztai @abhijith

it all started from RT, the infamous disinformation outlet

abhijith,

@fanboh @liztai RT said, "according to Ukranian media"🤣🤣🤣
They have managed to attract a minority of Indian extremists and often targets us with inflammatory India specific content. It is sad that some of these muppets want to kill all Muslims here but consoder Taliban as patriots.

abhijith,

@fanboh @liztai I read RT because atleast they provode a balanced view on Indian foriegn policies. Otherwise 99.9% of our local media is controlled by govenment and the western media is full of western propaganda apart from a handful of ethical sources.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@abhijith @fanboh Labelling media outlets as acceptable or not is a disturbing trend. No media, I repeat, no media is unbiased. That's why you need to read/watch widely. I read BBC & CNN even if I disagree with the condescending way they cover Asia. ,Yes, I also watch RT to see what they say. The idea is to compare how every outlet covers an issue. I have to admit that it's increasingly hard to read Western media as they've gotten increasingly racist and condescending, however.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai @abhijith I don’t follow RT but I guess it depends on the journalism quality also la. There’s probably no point reading The Global Times, Daily Mail or Epoch Times, for example.
@fanboh

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@rakyat @abhijith @fanboh Personally I do view RT with suspicion, but heeeey, that's me always running towards the fire. I never expect the news to agree with me, and it's interesting to see how they covered the Ukraine war. It was hard though so I didn't watch as much. Couldn't stomach any pro-spin towards war.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai Heh, I read Mein Kampf just as an intellectual exercise. It showed me that Hitler’s ideology isn’t really any different from what most conservatives, including people around me, think. Hitler simply got enough power to execute his plans. This is the kind of chilling realization that one only gets by reading things you don’t agree with.
@abhijith @fanboh

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@rakyat @abhijith @fanboh One of these days, perhaps a decade from now, perhaps I will cultivate enough will to read"Malay Dilemma" lol

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai Haha I read it as a teen. My dad got one copy in his library
@abhijith @fanboh

ubi,
@ubi@ecoevo.social avatar

@liztai @rakyat @abhijith @fanboh The "Malay dilemma" is actually a great read if you do it critically. You can see how Eugenicist and White supremacist ideas are filtered by the colonised mind into a justification to seize power and capital. I actually do recommend it.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@ubi @rakyat @abhijith @fanboh I think you're right. Being "afraid" or even "wary" of a supposedly notorious book is the perfect excuse to read it. I am going to get myself a copy. The Goodreads reviews were interesting and indicate there's something to learn from there.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@rakyat @abhijith @fanboh I had to read the Daily Times during my world OC edays :P It was surprisingly dry, like reading lots of press releases. lol. There's hardly any opinion, and everything is in day glo positivity. XD That said, I wish there were more hard-hitting news from China, but they will not happen lol.

abhijith,

@liztai @rakyat @fanboh We have The Hindu and a few others holding the fort but otherwise most are sold to bigcorps who fund the ruling party and a few others try hard to be independent but are under a lot of pressure.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@abhijith @fanboh @rakyat Yeah, I know the dynamics. I did work for a newspaper controlled by a political party after all. In an ideal world, journalism shouldn't be owned by corporations or governments; and that's why journalism is broken today.

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai I think the Chinese version of Global Times is more blatantly opinionated and nationalistic. Kinda like Utusan in Malaysia. The English versions are very toned down. @abhijith @fanboh

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@rakyat @abhijith @fanboh so annoyed i didn't pay attention during my POL classes I swear. I wish I could read Chinese media!

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai Chinese official media uses a lot of 1984-sque language that’s very fun to decode lol. I greatly enjoyed cutting through all the fluff to decode what they were really saying. And I realized that news/statements from North Korea uses the exact same kind of language.
@abhijith @fanboh

fanboh,
@fanboh@g0v.social avatar

@rakyat @liztai

speaking of utusan, the government has blocked access to the website http://UtusanTV.com to at least some internet users in Malaysia. :blackcat_11110:

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@fanboh I can still see it. Does this mean UMNO has lost control of utusan and its pro-PN now? @liztai

fanboh,
@fanboh@g0v.social avatar
liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@fanboh @rakyat I thought the outlet has nothing to do with Utusan?

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai Oh really? I’ve no idea tbh 😆 @fanboh

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@rakyat @abhijith @fanboh Daily Mail is great for a laugh on a very dry day 😆

rakyat,
@rakyat@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai @abhijith @fanboh I’d also trust media that are able to criticize their own governments a bit more, but this is again a complicated issue as sometimes the media is owned by the opposition party lol. Keyword is independence, but it’s all relative as media needs money to run. Even “reputable” media can still mislead readers like remember how the US media including the NYT parroted Bush’s Iraq WMD claim?

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@rakyat @abhijith @fanboh Lord yes. I was quite horrified during those years. That was when I started questioning America's role in the world. Those star-struck glasses sure broke fast when I read their media in those times.

abhijith,

@rakyat @liztai @fanboh Follow RT only if you can resist the feeling of throwing up every five minutes. They are vedy brutal and often use archaic language that we find disturbing these days.

liztai,
@liztai@hachyderm.io avatar

@abhijith @fanboh @rakyat Yeah it was difficult to watch during the start of the Ukraine war. Gawd.
