This is a rendition of a 6-day-old chicken embryo. It's a model I made for a project for a client. I took it as a base for an animation of the development of a chicken embryo from first division to hatching. That will take some time though ;-)

Can't help it: I'm a perfectionist, especially when I'm working on something as satisfying as this. So I perfected the skin and the eye. The funny thing: most people will find this probably a bit gruesome, I actually love images like this. The small veins, the light shadow of the bones developing

@miekeroth Looking good! Nice SSS and topology. Manual topology, or Quad Remesher?

miekeroth,
@miekeroth@socialserver.science avatar

@metin thanks! ZRemesher ;-) (which is the same of course 😉 ) I do sometimes do it manually, but for relatively simple topology as this, I can’t trump ZRemesher..
Most of the work went into the sss/material and the ‘photography’ if you know what I mean. The textue I started out with is really ugly 😬

@miekeroth @metin Nice and that reminds me of one reason I should open Zbrush now and then, the remesher.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@mbt3d @miekeroth 👍 Or you can buy Quad Remesher to have the same functionality right inside Blender.

miekeroth,
@miekeroth@socialserver.science avatar

@metin @mbt3d I really need to buy it actually: I go back and forward between ZBrush and Blender for such parts of the process.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@miekeroth @mbt3d If you use GoB / GoZ for Blender, switching between Blender and ZBrush is a breeze actually.

@metin @mbt3d @miekeroth Very nice work, Mieke. I never used Zbrush but have a subscription for quadremesher. I can't live without it. It's a huge time saver and fulfills all needs if you read the docs and know how to use it in complex situations. Face groups aren't really needed. By the way: you can mark faces with some dummy materials. It works the same, and you get independent retopo areas.

miekeroth,
@miekeroth@socialserver.science avatar

@CWernerArt @metin @mbt3d yeah, I use polygroups for that in ZBrush

CWernerArt,
@CWernerArt@mstdn.social avatar

@miekeroth @metin @mbt3d facegroups/Polygroups are existing in Blender too. But you can't use them (yet) for QuadRemesher. The Addon didn't get any updates in the rescent months. But it still works great, even with Blender 4. I don't know a better auto retopo routine for Blender. I know the coder (Maxime) has also written the original auto remesher. A great developer.

@metin@graphics.social avatar

@CWernerArt @miekeroth @mbt3d Yes, Maxime is a genius. He also coded UV Master and Decimation Master, also brilliant tools. ❤️

mbt3d,
@mbt3d@fosstodon.org avatar

@CWernerArt @miekeroth @metin I just got the trial to take a look again and it seems to work very well in Blender.
Some of the geo is still a little odd but it was like that in the early versions too.
What I like is how fast it works.

CWernerArt,
@CWernerArt@mstdn.social avatar

@mbt3d @miekeroth @metin Try higher poly amount or try the options. "Odd" is a bit subjective, if I don't know the mesh and what you actually expect. 😁

@CWernerArt @mbt3d @miekeroth Lots of tips and guidelines can be found in my Quad Remesher topic at Blender Artists:

JimPostier,
@JimPostier@mastodon.social avatar

@miekeroth Very nice. Is that a Blender render? I missed the quad remesher discussion but absolutely love it… mostly use zremesher, like you.

miekeroth,
@miekeroth@socialserver.science avatar

@JimPostier thanks! No, I rendered this in Marmoset Toolbag. It’s absolutely a life-saver regarding live-like renditions. As if you are working with an actual camera. And materials are easily tweaked.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@miekeroth @JimPostier Nice! I've got a Marmoset Toolbag 3 license, but have rarely worked with it. Does the latest Toolbag version include procedural materials yet? I'm not a fan of having to UV map models, bake procedural textures, etc..

When it comes to fast, near-realtime rendering, I'm not yet convinced of EEVEE Next. It's even broken in the latest Blender alphas.

Which renderer(s) do you use, Jim?

JimPostier,
@JimPostier@mastodon.social avatar

@metin @miekeroth 50/50 Eevee and Cycles. Marmoset sounds wonderful but my employer has to be strategically convinced to put anything more than a widget on my PC …in the name of security. They may be open to C4D but you know, Maxon.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@JimPostier @miekeroth Haha, yeah, Maxon… Autodesk's sibling. 😏
