To the #Camera folks here, does it make sense to buy a #Nikon D850 in 2023? I still have my expensive Nikon lenses and was wondering if I should get a new body to use them.

    sparx,

@kushal Depends on your budget. If you can go the Z mirrorless route, it's better - the EVF and seeing real-time preview is quite helpful. Highly recommend you spring for the FTZ adapter to use your old glass. For photography, more often than not, glass > body.

Yes, Nikon's AF is not as good as Sony's or Canon's but for now, it's good enough for an enthusiast or prosumer levels.

    p1ersson,

@kushal I have a ancient Nikon- DSLR, was looking around this summer go get a bit more modern house but it was few out there. Most have moved on I guess (i have a UW-house that I wont replace but a modern DSLR would be nice, i have had a hiatus - i wanna save my D200 for underwater... )

    LordEdam,

@kushal at that price point I’d pick up the z7ii with the ftz to use your lenses. Probably lots of good second hand options available with the recent z8 release

    tsvenson,

@kushal have you looked at the brand new Sony 6700?

It seems to have raised the bar quite a bit: https://youtu.be/vrl03a-WSuo

@tsvenson That is an APS-C body and I will need new lenses.

    tsvenson,

@kushal yes, but it is also about half the price compared to the D850. But maybe my tip was about giving you a taste of just how much has happened with DSLR recently. As I write, with the 6700 Sony raises the bar a lot.

@tsvenson That is true and thank you for pointing me to that camera.

I use (when I use) Fuji X100s for the last 10 years.

    tsvenson,

@kushal I've just gotten back to shooting with system cameras again the last year. Was a local freelance photographer decades ago.

It's impressive the tech they are able to squeeze into so limited packages.
