Supplying housing to professionals who move to take up positions is common in Oz. Why do we not do this here? Owning and managing houses, if done well, is cheaper than paying enough in salaries for rents or mortgage payments. Especially at times when these are ballooning.
In the zaibatsu system, wasn't it compulsory to live in the supplied house to get the job?
If professionals prefer to buy or rent a house in the area they're moving to, obviously that's fine. The house they would have been offered can then be rented out until another professional moving to the area needs it. I don't see anything sinister about making a lower salary with free housing an option.

I'm talking specifically about public services, not corporate jobs. But hell, is it any less dystopian to live in a tent while working in an scAmazon warehouse? At this point your cyberpunk dystopia has become an improvement on the one we actually live in ; )
