Was talking this morning about how lovely our garden is for damselflies & dragonflies in the summer, but didn’t expect to see my first Odonata of the season the same day 🙂
This is a large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula), usually the first damselflies of the year to emerge in April & May, in a quick iPhone picture.
The yellow shoulder stripes & abdomen appendages identify it as an immature male.
@markmccaughrean Great shot with a phone. Whenever I'm hiking around here there are bajillions of ebony jewelwings but I can't get a shot of them because they're just constantly moving! I can't get close.
@Nonya_Bidniss I used the UW camera on my phone in macro mode, which means getting in very close. Thankfully this damselfly allowed me to do so before flitting off; it was a quick shot also because the cat was yanking on his leash in the other direction 🤷♂️
