rml,

Whats a good server with cool hackers who are accepting of BDS activists? I just found out thats off topic here, with lots of ppl complaining. I 90% just post about #lisp & #scheme, but when political events involving movements im apart of crop up, I dont want to want to hold my tounge.

  • rml,

    i looked at the CoC,, and I don't seem to be in violation of any of these rules from what I can tell. but I get it, I've been a part of BDS since naughties and you get used to being censored, shunned and unwelcome whenever you get recognized as a pro-Palestine activist.

    and I'd rather not remain on a server where enough people have a strong enough issue with BDS that it becomes the exception that proves the rules.

    The functional.cafe server rules: https://functional.cafe/about

    @mdallastella @rml asking someone not to make political posts that you disapprove of sounds like censorship to me.

    You’re within your rights to define the server rules however you like but that doesn’t make it not censorship.

    @benjamineskola @mdallastella @rml

    Censorship would be if the posts were removed.

    (For example, I once had an anti-government post silently removed from facebook. This was censorship)

    Here, as I understand the situation, Marco is trying to defend the integrity of the community, because he received reports from other users.

    This is a signal that something is buzzing.

    The name of this instance strongly suggests its intended user profile. And it is not that discussing anything that doesn't match the profile should be forbidden or persecuted.

    But requesting the things which clearly don't match the profile to bear a CW really isn't that much to ask for, and I think it is completely fair to the users.

    @PaniczGodek @mdallastella @rml as I explicitly said, you’re perfectly within your rights to do so. Your server, your rules.

    But placing limits on political speech of which your disapprove is censorship.

    @benjamineskola @mdallastella @rml

    Maybe you have a different definition of censorship than the one that is commonly used.

    rml,

    @PaniczGodek @benjamineskola @mdallastella

    fwiw I don't feel like I was censored by Marco. I feel like I was targeted by some zionists, who probably brought it to him in a fury, called it antisemitism, and this being an otherwise extremely neutral server where no drama ever happens, the damage control for such contentious issues wasn't already in place. which is fair, people do this in their free time, and I've never encountered a perfect moderator on any forum.

    but I do think zionists doing this kind of stuff, which I've experienced in academia, the art world, the tech world, and even the socialist left, is a form of censorship. they surprise people and make them feel like they are going to have to fight against accusations of anti-semitism if they don't comply, because non-compliance with zionism is supposedly anti-semitism, and so people under pressure and needing to make quick decisions are likely to obey the "pleasure principal" in such circumstances, they'll typically take the path of least resistance. if this were a space for political discourse I would be mad, but I honestly don't think everyone and everything is political, most people are just trying grill, which I get.

    but I do think the tactics are censorship. sorry for the rant haha

    @rml sorry, I kind of didn’t intend for my reply to this to blow up like it did.

    @rml @benjamineskola @mdallastella

    this is also how I imagine this situation

    but this is also why I think you shouldn't start off by looking for a different instance (because if you do, you give them what they want)

    I agree that you probably haven't broken any rules (but I'm too lazy to look closely)

    What I think Marco shoud actually do next time is to say to whoever found your posts offensive (or whatever):

    "This is an instance where we value free speech. If you don't agree with the author of the post, tell him that directly. If you don't want to see the content from this author, you can mute or block him"

    But then again, I don't have the full picture of the situation (and the threats they could resort to)

    mdallastella,
    rml,

    @mdallastella @PaniczGodek @benjamineskola

    the reason I want to find another instance is primarily because I think the situation in Palestine is going to get much, much worse, and I honestly feel obligated to speak out and correct Hasbara narratives without a CW, because Ive spent a lot of time there and honestly believe Palestinians are being subjected to a manifest destiny-style genocide. I know it will be somewhat difficult to find a fede server to do that, so I may spin up my own, or perhaps a more political one, but you guys know me, I'm here to post about hacking. but I also think that Palestinian issues are one thing I actually don't want to hide between a CW; its too urgent, and speaking to friends there today, they are really getting worried that Biden's offer to evacuate children under 10 means there will be an extermination campaign like we've never seen before.

    rml,

    @mdallastella @PaniczGodek @benjamineskola

    I understand why people may not want to see that. but I believe intervention in discourse has been essential to every revolutionary turning of the tides, so I would much rather people mute or block me than post up a sign like "keep moving if you don't want to hear about Palestine"

    PaniczGodek,
    @PaniczGodek@functional.cafe avatar

    @rml @mdallastella @benjamineskola

    on the flip side, you can also read the sign as "now be mindful because here's a post about Palestine"

    I actually value your perspective a lot. There are some programmers from Israel whom I follow, and of course I find the whole situation extremely difficult (it seems that Israel was from the beginning designed as a powder keg).

    Then again, there's this narrative which, as you mentioned, shows up whenever you try to point out different aspects of Israel's behavior, and starts calling you out as antisemitic.

    (I fear that it's going to be extremely hard to find the sort of instance that would satisfy your criteria, because places where political speech is welcome is going to be stuffed with crackpots and propaganda, and in particular in BDS-friendly places you'll likely be preaching to the choir, or choiring to the preacher or whatever)

    rml,

    @PaniczGodek @mdallastella @benjamineskola thanks Panicz, I enjoy your company and perspective too.

    but I don't think I'll see you any less by goint to another server will I?

    I'LL BE WATCHING YOU 👁️👁️

    spdegabrielle,

    @rml be sure to post your new address.
    (And the follower transfer process can take some time)

    PS What is the BDS?

    rml,

    @spdegabrielle BDS is the movement to pressure states, international institutions, unions and all levels of civil society organizations to boycott, divest from, and place sanctions on Israel until they obey international law and end the apartheid system by giving equal rights to Palestinians, giving everyone equal rights, passports, suffrage, and freedom of movement, while allowing the refugees to return as Israel committed to in 1949 with UN resolution 194 as a condition to being admitted to the UN.

    Its the same strategy that lead to the initial dismantling of the apartheid system in South Africa.

    Will definitely follow u when I move; I didnt realize that your posts don't get transfered, so I'll probably just start a new account, because I don't want to lose the interesting discussions I've been in here.

    mdallastella,

    @rml @PaniczGodek @benjamineskola I understand your situation and I'll understand if you want to change instance.
    I'm trying my best to keep a balance, I accept that is not always possible.

    rml,

    @mdallastella I mean, it seems pretty clear. I didn't break any rules, rules are being made to accomodate the interests of other users. which is totally fine in a way, thats part of what makes fedi interesting.

    if I weren't so used to it, I'd probably be more offended, but its relatively become routine at this point. this is much better than facebook or twitter though, where I was simply banned amidst similar events years ago.
