New Houston mayoral campaign attack ads signal the time for pleasantries is over

“Houston, listen, we have a choice,” begins U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s first attack ad of the 2023 mayoral election season. That choice – which she claims is between the congresswoman and her chief opponent, state Sen. John Whitmire – “is simple. Sheila Jackson Lee for mayor.”

With a slew of mayoral forums and town halls behind them, several of the mayoral candidates are beginning to trade blows in campaign ads. Jackson Lee and attorney Lee Kaplan rolled out pointed ad campaigns last week, and former Metro Chair Gilbert Garcia said he would soon follow suit.
