@lambdageek a thing I discovered recently is that modern FPGA programmers are in significant numbers writing in tcl, because Verilog doesn't otherwise have macros and tcl is easy to wrap to generate Verilog
FPGA IDE developers picked up on this and started adopting tcl for eg build scripts. So there's this whole modern tcl ecosystem, all happening in the only level of programming lower level than assembly
