Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C Review: Delightful Heavyweight

I am curious - has anyone tried out these color e-ink Android tablets with some popular drawing/painting apps?

I have a reMarkable 2, which is decent for quick black & white sketching - but I really want a color e-ink tablet one day, and I want to make sure that color drawing and sketching works well with them.

ebike_enjoyer,

Boox is not the best company as far as longevity of products (software updates) and their disregard for following open source licensing, as others have mentioned here.

That said, I recently bought this exact tablet. The software on it is functionally great, and the colors, while muted, seem great for comics, and art/drawings, but not photos. Videos are completely out, though it’s neat to kind of see how it would work on e ink. For me, I’m using it to read longer posts from my rss feed and for books. I’m also planning to try testing using it as a second display for my laptop, so I have something to look at with less eye strain. Eye strain from my phone/laptop was a big pull for me getting an e ink device with android vs something like the remarkable or even a kindle. Maybe I’ll get into manga or comics too. Unless you have a need for color, if you already have a good e ink device, I’m not sure I’d recommend it. Really hope a solid competitor arrives in this space soon, though, or alternatively if Boox would just open source their software.

Mane25,

Isn't this the company accused of violating GPL and not releasing their Linux source code?

I think colored eink is a great idea, unfortunately I will never buy a boox device at this point. Their business model is similar to phone model, pushing out new model is much more important than maintaining old model.

IMO this practice is very wasteful, extremely bad for the environment (electronics are in general very toxic), and ultimately just anti consumer.

That being said, different people have different needs, and have to face different trade-offs. Absolutely no judgement if anyone decided to get one. I am just saying personally I would much prefer the supernote's business model than boox.

I have the onyx boox nova air c which has a stylus and color e ink screen. I don't really use it for drawing though. The colors are pretty limited (think a faded old timey comic book). But the stylus response is good. I haven't tried drawing apps but I can run pretty much any android app on it.

I mostly use it for reading manga/webcomics, typing books, and reading. I've got it loaded up with a some Latin dictionaries so I can use it for language learning. The nova air c is an older model so maybe the color screen is better on the new ones lol.

The color is nice, but for serious artists I can't imagine the nova air c is sufficient.

Well, a dedicated Wacom tablet with in-built screen is always going to be superior for serious artwork.

But when you are traveling, the ability to do quick digital color sketches in broad daylight could be very useful indeed.

Yup the screen is great and visible in daylight. And the colors are definitely colors. The writing is responsive. The question is basically whether the drawing tools and color range are good enough for artists.

One of the reasons I want a colored eink is that I can finally starting to draw my slides instead of writing it.

Although I have never tried a Wacom tablet connecting to my PC. I heard they have pretty good Linux support. Maybe that would suffice.

I have the onyx boox note air 2, while not in color, the tablet is fantastic. I'm weighing out my options to see if and when it could make sense to upgrade to the color option as my current tab is that good!
