atomicpoet,

This is why decentralized social media needs to happen.

The fight isn't just with surveillance capitalists but also governments they may want to clamp down on online dissidents.

Now that Vietnam is requiring citizens verify their identities in order to use social media, this concern should be top of mind.

The sooner we make decentralized social media a reality for everyone, the better!

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews Decentralized is not enough. Anonymous and deniable. If you want identity it should be (at most) a key you generated. And if you don't want to "exist" as the old identity anymore, you make a new key and start over. But most likely we don't even want identity in the first place. To pay taxes and get insurance or whatnot, maybe. But not to rant about programming or to discuss repairing old drum machines.

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews Lots of different decentralized social media as well. Best way to make it deal with unforeseen events.

lexpedite,

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews If a Government had demonstrated a lack of restraint and transparency in using its authority to restrict speech, we shouldn't give it any more tools.

But anonymity doesn't guarantee free speech, and free speech doesn't require anonymity. It has benefits, but it also very clearly has significant risks, including risks to freedom of speech itself. Bad actors online may be actively opposed to free speech.

I'm not sure the balance is so clearly in favour of anonymity.

@atomicpoet how does a federated social network help, though? Instances serving Vietnamese people will have to comply by the law just like the big guys. Unless you are thinking something more p2p.

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews I don't see how a decentralized social media would make a difference.

If a user has to verify their identity, Centralized or Decentralized would fall under the same rules.

It's bad either way,
