Folks! My friend was at a “junk” shop and found an old computer he thought I might like (a Vic 20? Uh yeah) so he bought it and sent it to me. It works straight away. But the amazing thing? See next post in this thread
This is the third of the tapes in the set of tapes that came with the vic20 and the first one that works. It’s called UFO-Pilot and appears to have been published in 7/28/82 - video in following post
Today the vic20 woke up feeling good and it found a previously unfindable game in one of the cartridges I’d tried before and had given up as damaged. Welcome to “Jumping Jack”. Unfortunately this game is not documented in the hand-written friendly guide that came with the machine when I found it. I’ll make a small video of the game next.
Here’s one quick play through of the game Jumping Jack, where, of course, you have to jump over tiny holes that might suddenly open up while walking around some multilevel building and just trying to make it to the next ladder . lol no thanks.
Way more fun and WAY WAY louder than Jumping Jack lol. Turn down your volume, take off your headphones, the blizzard sound in this is head splitting. But, when your little skier crashes into stuff the whole screen shakes which is pretty sweet and if you run head first into a tiny pine tree you get a little cross. Would play again if I was bored to death.
Took a break for a walk with the fam but now back at this stuff with Math Test! This one has credits!

Math Test for the vic20. I would have enjoyed this as a kid. Fun little feedback noise when you get it right. I forgot to list the code so will do that after I run the next game I found on this tape.
Next on the same tape is Math Girl. I thought it was like hangman but with math but it’s not, and you get shot at from a stick sticking out of a set of steps and you lose lives. I guess I would have enjoyed it as a kid but probably would have tried to shorten the shot sound effect because it takes so long after you get it wrong to just play that giant crssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - ok gameplay
Space Math on the vic20
is next! Will my player get shot out the air lock if I get my math wrong? Will aliens zap me with lasers if I divide incorrectly?

That’s it for today on this computer archaeology expedition. One of the tapes had a loose felt thing that goes behind the tape so I’m fixing that up and hope to try it tomorrow.
After a day waiting for the glue to dry on the felt backing of the Vic 20 game tape labeled Paratrooper it is now loading via the tape. Let’s see what it has.
Success! Credits load and then before the game starts it has this message saying that as the game loads the characters will change. I guess it’s updating something in the display that changes the characters for the game.
One of the more fun games in this set of tapes. I must have played this game back in the day, would have been on the c64 though because I never had access to a vic20.
@dec_hl he is my best friend from high school, yes =). And thank you for the kind offer re the datasette. I'm not in DE. Someone else offered me one in exchange for donating to a dog rescue so I'll eventually get one.
