But instead of trying to figure this out ahead of time, I'd probably (by now) suggest giving both more time by returning the friendly behavior. If you like the other person it's generally recommend to show interest in them – if you cannot get yourself to be interested in them in more than superficial ways it won't work out anyway.
But I haven't understood the protocol of how one figures out who does the first move.
