i wonder why other devs don't seem to localize to (brazilian) portuguese. the 2nd highest country for wishlists for kitsune tails is brazil (7% vs USA 40%), and historically we've had lots of sales from brazil. i get that the price per unit for that region is low but come on that's still a lot of fans you're leaving out in the cold by not localizing your game for them

@eniko Genuine question, got any idea of if the increased sales would cover the cost of a translation? I feel that even if it’s a wash it means a potentially bigger audience and a translator gets paid.

(Since I prefer English even if my native tongue is supported I genuinely have no clue. And a fair number of people do speak English as well.)

@breadbin localization tends to be very cheap so unless the game is a flop it'd earn the money back

@eniko the real question is both chinese and spanish.
They're both spoken by larger chunks of population and thus by chance more probable that you'll get people Who aren't fluent, or rather don't even know at all, english language.
Chinese in particular has results, I've seen.
Some people do this for russian too as It is a relatively easy language for niches (strategy games, dark themed realistic stuff)

@Nawer_Rapter spanish and simplified chinese are very popular localization targets though, for games that actually do get localized

@eniko That PirateSoftware person behind Heartbound talks openly about how they priced their game for Brazil to avoid piracy, and it's now the biggest source of income for them.

@eniko i think you answered your question: in the era of minmaxing profits even in indie world people bet on few "core" localisations for EU and US ignoring every other country like there's no people in here, because some talking head said that if they want to make money, they should focus only on those two regions

@j_bertolotti i'll ask my localizer and get back to you but as i understand it they tend to use different words for stuff in brazil. they're clearly mutually intelligible so i think its a lot like localizing specifically for UK english and using UK colloquialisms rather than US, which has a much bigger market

@j_bertolotti my localizer informs me that the difference is so significant that there are actually localizations between brazilian and regular portuguese

@eniko @j_bertolotti yup, if you do Portuguese-Portugal or Portuguese-Brasil majority of people will understand both. But there are different words that out of context might be hard to understand. Source: I’m from PT
