so often when tinkering with 3d printers i hear people saying

"why dont just machine something from metal or wood"

typically those people are quite good with power tools.

well desktop EDM is here.

it might look pricey but 400€ for a power supply which enables u to cut through all conductive materials is awesome!

it is a game changer and i am so fucking glad it is OPEN SOURCE!

@grillchen I absolutely love how they made the V2 an Ender conversion kit to make it super affordable (for what it is).

@Natanox and it makes it much easier to start and put it on other printers aswell.

a kit is much easier to statt with than documents. and the kit has the same price as the wire tool kit hotend + the power supply

with what? laser or CNC or...?

@grillchen but you can only 2D machine and only like a bandsaw, not like a CNC

@kaia with wire yes.

but there are all kind of variants.

from stamps, molding, surface strenghten (afaik molding at a lower temperature)
drilling etc

but to put them on 3d printers wires are probably the best. molding is complicated, and probes (sinker or ram edm) for milling are expensive and get used really fast. but they can do what ever a cnc mill can do. but i would leave that for big industrial machines

@kaia EDM

electric discharge.

u have either a probe or a wire under high voltage cutting through the material. the sparks reach above 12000C°

u submerge the probe/wire and the thing u wanna remove parts from under a nonconductive liquid ( destilled water or oil)

it is melting through everything conductive and u can even put shapes into it. not only cutting (well wire is cutting only)

this is faaaar simpler and easier than laser or CNC (well technically it is "Computerized Numerical Control", but what u meant was a "CNC milling machine")

@grillchen amazing, never heard of that!!
