Mouse Systems Corporation M-1 Mouse (OEM version: Sun Type 4)
This is one of the two first optical mice to be released for sale, back in the early 80's. I'm going to strip it down and deep clean it!
I've made some Mouse skates out of those sticky feet you can buy for electronics, that stop them scratching surfaces. The mouse mat is metal and this should stop it damaging it.
But how does it work?
It has two LED emitters one red, one green, the reflected light is focused by the two spherical lenses, then the light is reflected again by the mirrors on the case's top, this is then detected by the two receivers on the circuit board and decoded.
This thing looks beautiful, it's fully scrubbed and cleaned and it actually operates 100x better now all the dust on the internal components is gone.

@Gammitin oh my. Those are some seriously bad mouses. I've never seen one work adequately, and I say that as someone who used to work for Sun (although they were obsolete some time before I joined)
