#FPQuestion of the day:
What brand or model of pen do you think is a “best value buy”, “bang for your buck”, or “punches above its price point”?
#FountainPen

@penfount the English made Parker Duofolds from the 1940s-1960s. You can still find it for less than 30€ and, for that price, you can't get anything better.

@penfount Jinhao 80 and Hongdian M2.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@mostlycheap the Hongdian M2 is the pocket pen?

@mostlycheap@penfount.social avatar

@paradoxmo the very same. Solid, instant writer, comfortable.

@penfount I’m gonna say Hongdian, I’ve had very good experiences with their nibs, and several of their pen models. They’re not all “for me”, but they are quality products for a very reasonable price.

Moonman has also gotten really good in the last couple years. Their quality control has gotten a lot better, it used to be that I would immediately swap the nib because it was so shitty, but recently i’ve gotten some really good nibs from them, and even the not great ones were okay and wrote fine.

@penfount @paradoxmo

Good pens, I had N7 that I sold and now have N6 with long blade nib. I had problems with N7, so far so good with N7.

For about the same price I would choose Asvine #fountainpens over Hongdian. I am eyeing V200 right now. :)

@penfount pilot kakuno, hands dowm, especially after I put a clip on it.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@inkycicada which clip did you use, the Kaweco Sport clip or something else?

inkycicada,
@inkycicada@penfount.social avatar

@paradoxmo yes that’s the one!

keraba,
@keraba@mastodon.social avatar

@inkycicada @paradoxmo +1 to Pilot Kakuno.

I would have said "Platinum Preppy" several years ago, but the nibs are scratchy, and the caps crack if they even stay on. (In fairness, they keep the ink wet decent enough.)

The Kakuno's EF nib is smooth (!) and the plastic is solid. Plus minor things like: The feed saturates nicer. It's like a high-end pen for cheap. (I dont' use a clip and they're hex so they don't roll away anyways...)

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@keraba @inkycicada there’s always the option of Plaisir or Starlet, that takes care of the easily cracked barrel problem. And YMMV, but I think the Preppy EF is smoother than the Kakuno EF generally (it’s also slightly wider)

@penfount

Jinhao 9019. For 12$ you get a very smooth #8 nib, screw in converter with about 1.8mm ink capacity and even ridges at the ens of the barrel so converter won't rattle. And for a 3$ - 4$ more you can get this pen with a heartbeat nib.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@backtoanalog agreed, pen is very well designed, specially made converter is essential for a jumbo pen or else you’re not taking advantage of its jumboness
