Vid of torching the steaks. This was really fun & I learned A LOT which was the point. The torch was as easy and fun to use as I had hoped. What did I learn?
Torch right on the grill. I used the tray w/ aluminum foil to try & catch any juices but the 2400° flame evaporates any liquids & melts the foil (1250°)
Next time I will re-season the steaks prior to torching. Salt, pepper maybe garlic salt to help form crust
@gedeonm the sear itself should be sufficient to seal in juices. Any fat that falls to the coals just create more flames to sear the other side. But that’s assuming uhm, regular charcoal fire?
@Chancerubbage The torch is rated for 2400° actually so the foil didn’t stand a chance. 😏
The steaks for already cooked in a sous vide bath to 128° so all I had to do was sear the outside. There was no charcoal involved here at all, I simply put them on my propane grill grates to torch them.
@gedeonm Fun! This may also be good complement for the smoker, which doesn't get hot enough for searing. I have a Weed Dragon torch for the garden thats functionally the same device. I'll have to give this a try!
So the big question you probably have is, what did it taste like? Was it worth cooking them this way?
They tasted like they were cooked over a charcoal grill. We did not taste the propane at all, no chemical taste, just char-grilled flavor which was nice.
I was really hoping for more of a crust but since I didn’t re-season before torching that didn’t happen. I will know better for next time.
They could have been torched for another 3-4 min EASILY and still not have been over cooked. 👍
@eabowers Yeah, I’ve wanted to try it for a long time now and if nothing else it’s super fun. Like holding a mini-jet engine in your hands. I’m curious to try it on chicken and fish and esp veggies. 👍🔥
Okay the torch kicks serious ass at cooking hot dogs. Blasted them for about 30-45 seconds and then nuked for another 30 secs to warm through. Result? Chargrilled flavored dogs in less than 2 min. They are really good and beats standing over a grill for 10-15 minutes by a mile. Highly recommended! 🔥🔥🔥
Made bacon wrapped grilled jalepeno poppers for @Batz birthday dinner tonight. 🎉🥳 The blow torch came in super handy for this one. Instant crispy bacon FTW! NOM!
