Should I switch the server as my admin is blocking @spacex (the whole server) ?

Bad poll. There are plenty of reason to block Bird.Makeup and Threads that aren't blind hatred of Elon/Zuck for no reason: spam, moderation, overtaxed network, starving Twitter of views, and even the simple inability to actually comment back.

I don't know why @nicdex blocked them, it happened before I came on, but maybe you should ask him before you go off on a rant about how people have no reason to take issue with the unstable billionaire who bought the biggest social network with Saudi financing so people would stop making fun of him.

Not saying it's wrong to think he's over-demonized, not saying it's wrong to want to follow bird.makeup accounts, but this is a hell of a straw-man and a hell of a way to jump when, as far as I know, you haven't even asked our admin about the block. That would be the best step to solve it without leaving the server: he might even unblock it for you if you make a counter-case.

This, however, is not how you do civil discourse.

spaceflight,

@Raccoon maybe you should also ask why you've been blocked ?

@spaceflight
That was me when I was testing something a while back, actually.

edwinhorneij,

@spaceflight I voted in your poll by accident when I touched an option to try to scroll or zoom out so I could actually read it on my phone. Turns out I voted for it and can’t undo. As it is, I have no idea what I voted for, or what any of the options are beyond the first few words.

spaceflight,

@edwinhorneij no worries, what was your intention ? (the vote is anyway just to say "it's completely dorky to weigh anything just on Elon"). The whole page is thought to make people think 🤔. Seems to be worth it in your case 😀

edwinhorneij,

@spaceflight @edwinhorneij I didn’t have an intention. I was just trying to look at the options. I couldn’t actually read any of them beyond the first three or four words. I guess my app doesn’t display polls correctly.

spaceflight,

@edwinhorneij most likely, I assume. Checked with my app (I seldom use it), looks like this. But it's probably not comparable with yours https://open-store.io/app/nl.btr.mastodon

spaceflight,

There seems to be no problem with the professionals https://astrodon.social, check @spacex (on their server)

spaceflight,

Musk might do more to combat #ClimateChange than just about any lefty environmental activist or politician you can name.
“Among the least financially advisable projects imaginable for someone in that position would be to start a #rocket 🚀 company” https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/28/opinion/elon-musk-twitter-business.html 🍿😇

@spaceflight well this article aged like milk. You don't seriously believe that Musk's acceleration of EVs outweighs his use of a private jet, let alone the contributions of anyone else on earth, do you?

spaceflight,

@SallyStrange well there are about a dozen "old milk" things I really appreciate, they are called "cheese". And it would be interesting to see a statistic how Elon's private flights outhweigh his influence on electric vehicles. Please share 🔗

@spaceflight
I question the narrative that Elon was so historically essential to electric cars or rocketry research. All of his companies, except for X, the failed financial firm, were founded and built by other people, after which he came on as essentially a glorified spokesman and money guy.

It was pretty obvious to a lot of people, perhaps most people studying the issues, back in the 2000s, that there was a lot of money to be made in taking the viable technologies of electric cars and private space rockets, and bring them into maturity, if you had a couple billion dollars to throw at the problems. The idea that Elon was somehow the essential genius in the equation doesn't hold water here, they just needed a semi-charismatic guy to give them money and talk up the cars.

Is that good for the environment? Is that good for space flight? Sure, probably, but I don't think we can assume that he was essential, nor that this was entirely out of the goodness of his heart.

spaceflight,

@Raccoon "the company has broken records and brought electric vehicles into the mainstream" https://www.forbes.com/sites/qai/2022/09/29/tesla-a-history-of-innovation-and-headaches. Regarding SpaceX : You may probably explain why Boeing, Blue Origin and others lag behind ? 🤔🙄 And who founded it ? https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-locations-maps-texas-california-florida-washington-2018-3

If you feel you would do better there, you should go there. We don't have any incentive to make you stay: we are a voluntary not-for-profit organization on an open network.

My only request is that you don't make these kinds of straw-man hot-takes over there, because I don't want their moderators to have to get reports on them. No mod team on mainstream Fedi wants people getting into fights.

@spaceflight I'm not sure it's for an admin to block it, just personal decision.. I block it because it's a bot, there's no value to it in my timeline as I can't reply to anything.

(sms and email block all the time, btw.).

spaceflight,

@tony I didn't get your point https://techhub.social/about. I don't need to reply to SpaceX news, it's like an RSS feed @nicdex

@spaceflight @tony
Once again, maybe you should ask him directly instead of making passive-aggressive polls and straw-man arguments. Putting better labels on the blocklist is on the TODO list for the instance, but he's not hard to reach: he's an active user who checks his messages every couple days. He's literally right there, getting notifications about some conversation he doesn't know the context for every time we tag him. I'm surprised he hasn't said anything, but maybe you'd get a quicker response if you asked him directly.

Until he responds though, there's no point in argument, because you don't know why Bird.Makeup is blocked, you don't know what he might say to do, and you don't know that he won't unblock it if you ask him, or potentially point you to some other, more streamlined method for following Twitter accounts.
