One of the really sad aspects of having so many grifters tarnish the reputation of carbon offsets is that even though people like Al Gore and John Kerry use their private planes in order to help reduce fossil fuel burning and offset the emissions they cause doing it, most people like Taylor Swift probably don't.
Regardless if she does or not, the Tu quoque attacks they level against them are still effective at making the target audience angry effectively sadly.
@GreenFire@donniecash818 Offsets convey the incorrect idea that carbon removal is a substitute for rapid emissions reductions. Carbon removal must be additional, there is no substitute for emissions reductions! Also, most offsets are a scam.
Monitoring, verification, and reporting has addressed pretty much all of the grifting and overstatements that were made in the initial stage of offsetting carbon emissions, but I understand that it's difficult to change opinions after they've become part of an ideology. https://www.carbonfuture.earth/
@GreenFire@ClipHead@donniecash818 DAC is super expensive and still only makes sense as a supplement to emissions reductions. It doesn’t displace the need for rapid direct emissions reductions.

C'mon man. Just because some people oversold some offsets over a decade ago is no reason to trash an important aspect of our response to global warming.
And that you keep asserting that #DAC is too expensive just indicates that you've not spent a minute learning about #BioChar or enhanced rock weathering, but whatever.
@GreenFire@ClipHead@donniecash818 On the contrary, we have a whole chapter about carbon removal in our textbook, but we make it clear that it is expensive compared to emissions reductions and is not a substitute for such reductions, as many incorrectly believe (a belief that the concept of offsets encourages).
