Last night I came up with (and implemented!) an idea for a mastodon client that automatically curates my feed by categorizing toots. It's just idea phase right now, but I wrote about the process here https://timkellogg.me/blog/2023/12/19/fossil #LLMs #AI #feditips

prosetech,

@kellogh This is an amazing exercise, even just as a proof of concept--but it sounds like it's good enough to be useful already. Curious to hear if you keep using it.

@prosetech yeah, it's been great. It's changed the way i use social media. I have a morning routine where i sit down and read EVERYTHING that i care about that happened yesterday...in 10 minutes. Then from that moment on, my social media usage is purely for fun and carefree

I'm almost ready launch it as a service, so that it's easier for other people to use. Probably next week

@kellogh this is exactly the idea I had in mind. I actually implemented inside @raccoonbits (https://github.com/mahomedalid/raccoonbits)
but did not release the embeddings version.

Now I am trying to bring that timeline to a fork of @phanpy https://phanpy.social/

So if you are interested I would be happy to join efforts!

@kellogh when will mastodon users realize that an algorithmically fed timeline isn't better than chronologically

kellogh,

@Jessica it seems myself and others follow a progression:

  1. we don’t need an algorithm, chrono all the way!
  2. actually this is out of hand, give me an algorithm, just one that i control

here’s a lobste.rs thread where a few people talk about it

@kellogh I've been here for 7 years and not once have I thought that adding an algorithm was a good thing

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@Jessica okay, i guess we all have different experiences. i know of lots of people that echo yours, i just experience it differently

Jessica,
@Jessica@kitsunes.club avatar

@kellogh tons of people new to fedi expect it to work the same way and have the same experience, but that's far from the case.
simply if you don't like someone's post just unfollow them or mute them. you don't have to see their posts.

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@Jessica the reason i went this direction is that there’s a lot of people where i like some of their content, but it not others. a lot of the good content isn’t tagged well, so following hashtags is little more than a discovery feature. and a low of people, i don’t want to mute them at all! i like what they have to say, just not all of it. it all seemed incredibly automatable…

Jessica,
@Jessica@kitsunes.club avatar

@kellogh why would you automate it?

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@Jessica idk, i’m a software engineer, it’s what i do. why occupy my mind with busywork when i can solve the problem once and for all? move on to other things…

Jessica,
@Jessica@kitsunes.club avatar

@kellogh idk using AI seems like a pretty piss poor way of fixing the problem :akko_shrug:

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@Jessica idk it seemed like the only viable option to me. some sort of NLP and/or clustering technique is required afaict, and transformer-based embeddings are phenomenal at doing this sort of thing. it’s a whole lot less sensitive to quirks in the text

@Jessica @kellogh
I think users should have the ability to choose what timeline organization suits their wants.
If it turns out that like three people use Kellog's timeline, then so be it.
Now if he was saying that everybody should use it, I would take issue.

Jessica,
@Jessica@kitsunes.club avatar

@Paradox @kellogh yeah I could get behind that. I just wouldn't be happy thrown into an AI model. I don't like it. If I could opt out of that I would like it.

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@Jessica @Paradox to be clear, i’m only using this on my feed, to display my home feed differently. it’s not some big data analysis thing, it’s just displaying my own feed differently. since i don’t follow you, you’re not gonna show up
