Recently picked up that an "IDE" is a largely uncustomized, out-of-the-box experience, and that (Neovimmers) call the result of their customizations a "PDE", a "Personal Development Environment" instead.

Made me wonder:

Is the notion that IDE's are what they are, mostly unchangable, a common one?

@ctietze I don't think people are saying that IDEs are "unchangeable", but there's a difference between a) changing a few (or many) settings and installing some third-party plugins, and b) being able (and, to some degree, expected) to write scripts, i.e. program, your editor to do basically anything.

@ctietze I’m not sure if that’s an accurate way to describe IDEs. Xcode, perhaps, but while Visual Studio is no Emacs, it allows you to configure the UI elements, the colourscheme, the key bindings, set up custom commands, install plugins, etc. I don’t know how common it is to use all these features (I, for one, have barely scratched the surface), but there’s a lot in there.

@ctietze many of the IDEs are very customizable. Like Visual studio code every aspect could be customized with some JavaScript knowledge.

But looking and behaving in a common and predictable way is probably one of their strengths, and which makes the learning experience more smoothly.

The introduction of the term PDE is maybe more about standing out, and separating themselves from IDEs

@Flyingmana Hm, I wonder if VSCode counts as an IDE, and not a very customizable app that by defaults starts as a mere text editor.

Opposed to the regular Visual Studio application, which comes equipped with debugger and all.
