okay peeps, which #music vocalists are you so fond of that you will literally listen to an album of them just reading names from a phone book?

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

There’s probably too many for me to list properly, but the ones that leap to mind:

  • Tess Parks
  • Peter Murphy
  • Mike Doughty
  • Jace Lasek (of The Besnard Lakes)

@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche wow other than Peter I need to hear all of these 🤯

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 Lemme find some good examples of 'em...

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche ok! Oh and I see Mike is Soul Coughing, who I've heard - but I still wanna know your fave song(s) haha

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 Tess Parks (with Brian Jonestown Massacre) - https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=gxr-ya1vDfw&feature=share

Peter Murphy (formerly of Bauhaus) — https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=rpfkOxSXwAA&feature=share

Mike Doughty (with Soul Coughing) - https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=It7TJ2p5XiA&feature=share

Mike Doughty (without Soul Coughing) - https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=QhRWoWpCjjM&feature=share

Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes) - https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=p1zGVhvetrU&feature=share

… the Jace Lasek one I’m kinda unsure if it’s specifically his voice or just the production aspects. It reminds me of Brian Wilson/Beach Boys, but with heavier backing music.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche going through this list - first thoughts - you're not kidding about Tess haha

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 she's got that smokey raspy voice... I guess I'd place it somewhere along a spectrum between Janis Joplin and Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star). So good.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche it definitely has a Mazzy Star feel more than Janis 😂 man, my dad loves her and I just can't do that voice. I was also getting a little That Dog maybe or Garbage - something slick and cool like that, I've always been a big Lisa Loeb, Sheryl Crow fan too- I'm picky about female voices (I guess? I also like Amy Winehouse, a ton of old Motown stuff..) but wow. Gonna listen to more of her stuff

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 I'm exactly the same with female vocalists -- I feel like they have to have that raspy edge to them, more often than not.

Hope Sandoval (mazzy star) 👍
Tess Parks 👍
Beth Gibbons (portishead) 👍
Tessa Murray (Still Corners) 👍
Marie-Claire Balabanian (Speck Mountain) 👍

Kim Wilde and Shirley Manson kinda veer into that territory for me at times, but it's inconsistent. 😂

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche oooh yeah I love Portishead.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche yeah, still not a Peter Murphy fan haha. But Soul Coughing - wow. I think I've been missing out ignoring them all these years. Also, look who's in the list after them 😂 GET OUTTA MY HEAD

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 Soul Coughing has a lot of similiarities to Beck.

The band was such a weird combo... It was basically a beat poet, an upright bass player, an experimental noise artist, and a drummer.

It's a shame the band was so destructive to Mike. It basically coincided with his drug addiction period, but it made for some great creative material.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche ohh wow yeah musicians and drugs, right haha. You really have to look out for it, it's EVERYWHERE, I definitely saw a lot when I played haha. Avoided the hard stuff, I can't imagine. It's probably because at the time, all the bands with Soul in the name could get confusing, Soul Asylum, etc.. hahaha.

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 they shoulda had a "Soul" tour.

Soul Coughing
Soul Asylum
De La Soul
Soul II Soul
Collective Soul
Warrior Soul

🤣

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche THIS IS WHAT I MEAN

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 every venue would've had a soul'd out show!

:rimshot:

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche 😂 😂

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche I see nothing I dislike here. 😂 OH have you heard new Hives?

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche another thought - Doughty's voice also has a kind of Cake feel. It also reminds me maybe of like, Fountains of Wayne or how I imagine Pavement would sound if they learned to write good hooks (I hate Pavement haha)

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche okay for the Besnard Lakes.. it's GOOD when it kicks in around the 2 minute mark (the intro is too long! hahaha), kinda reminds me of Polyphonic Spree or maybe like Flaming Lips if Wayne Coyne wasn't exhausting me by trying so hard. 😂

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 Besnard Lakes is definitely all about the slow build.

Their whole "Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night" album is a series of slow builds.

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 I have barely heard old Hives, so ... nope, not yet.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche Oh man. Hahaha. The Hives are something special. They definitely have songs that I don't re-listen to but when it gels (it usually does) they're ridiculous. The new album gets a little weird in the middle but it blasts out of the gate with like, 4 or 5 bangers right off the bat.

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 giving it a listen now.

so far this makes me want to drive nowhere fast

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche YES. Bogus Operandi to start the album. FIRE

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 This 👏 album👏 has 👏 more 👏 clapping 👏 than 👏 I 👏 would’ve 👏 expected.

😁

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche a final note on the Hives - this is my curated list. It can even shuffle. 41 bangers, old to new. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUo1OYrFf_NoTJsSWB4ZeDzPWiUOhxIld

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 Thought of 2 more vocalists for my list:

  • Ronan Harris (VNV Nation)
  • Eskil Simonsson (Covenant)

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtSoBRkP2is9hU3EAeblIV33s4mmzKLKG

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche ooh more to hear. Added that sucker!

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 fair warning, it's EBM/Futurepop stuff... not sure how you feel about dark electronic music.

I had a goth clubby dance phase in life.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche 🤣 I like some! I like a fair share of jungle etc

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche I'm thinking of more. Maybe Beck. Today I was listening to Tuff Guac in the morning (the side project of the Belgian guy from Moar) and my wife goes 'it sounds like garage rock Beck'. Which it kinda does. And I told her that actually old Beck WAS pretty garagey lo fi stuff hahaha - yeah, I guess really it's all the same kind of stuff I like.

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 I should probably listen to more old Beck. :joy:

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche I think I'm kinda like a Beck fanatic too haha. The old stuff is fun but I'm fairly picky about the songs I listen to a lot of, I have so much on my phone and everything else, I love old to new, but these 6 are a fun kinda chronological romp, I even like a lot of his new stuff. Wow is very divisive as I understand but I instantly kinda loved it, and I can still repeatedly listen to it, too. Dreams, in my opinion (THIS mix) is a masterpiece.

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 I tend to treat "Sea Change" as a single track. It's a masterpiece, but definitely requires being in the right mood. I guess similar to Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock" album... you hafta be in a mood to appreciate it. Not a party album. :blobcatlaugh:

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche Sea Change is one I didn't take to that much. I love Mutations though. That's a full listen. Sea Change I do like Sunday Sun and Little One though. I often sing Little One to my cats and wife hahaha (she only recently discovered it's a Beck song, she just thought it was something I sang 😂 )

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche oh man and every time I see this damn bear from the Cellphone's Dead video, I laugh. Beck's videos are always epic but this one shot kinda sums up everything I want in my music. 😂

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche oh, and there are SO MANY other Beck songs obviously that are amazing other than these 6, but I just thought it was wild to take Beercan (my fave of his older ones?) to the brand new.

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 Checking out Tuff Guac now. 👍

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche oh man Tuff Guac is insane (someday I'll be able to write a song as great as Friskoman), the guy (Rafael) that also does Moar.. one of my favorite living songwriters. Not many misses. Pretty much every Moar album I can do front to back too. It's wild

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche Pat DiNizio from the Smithereens instantly came to mind. I mean, they ARE my favorite band forever, and as you might've seen via my (tiny) vinyl collection, I'm a bit of a fanatic. Pat (RIP) even made this weird low-budget movie with him just like, walking around, being an odd sleazeball? And it IS just him talking about random nonsense the whole time. And, at the time, I even pre-ordered it. I mean, it's here in my desk. So.. yeah. 😂
