I am a fan of BlueSky, in general, but the low character limit stops me from posting stuff I've written for Mastodon and Threads.

Mastodon's limit is 500 characters. That's PLENTY. Threads is close to that.

BlueSky's limit is 300 characters. That's too low, compared to the freedom of the other two.

Any chance this changes?

GilsDesk,

@davemark This is still the main reason people will abandon Bluesky. They are a great service, but the low character limit cripples it. When I can’t post something over there due to the character limit, I instead post a notice saying I couldn’t share a thing there for that reason, but you can find it ‘here’ on Threads or ‘here’ on Mastodon. Maybe more of this from more folks will get their attention. (PS: This post would not have fit on #Bluesky.)

@davemark Mastodon’s default character limit is 500, but that’s up to the instance admin and not a limitation of Mastodon itself. For example, the maximum character limit on my instance is 10,000.

@davemark I don’t really understand why there’s a character limit on either service. Text is tiny compared to photo/video

vetehinen,

@peterbutler @davemark if you find the default character limit on Mastodon to be overly restrictive you can just go to an instance that has increased it, there are ones with over 10k characters allowed per post. You'll also find higher limits on non-Mastodon instances.

@vetehinen @davemark True, true. I’ve been considering it, but honestly adding markup text is more important to me, and I haven’t bother to research instances. One day...

@davemark my understanding is that they intend to keep it this way - see the bottom comment of the lead dev here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39550656

@mackuba Appreciate this. In a vacuum, forced short form might work, but in a multi social network world, a standard needs to emerge to make cross posting easier. My 2 cents.

@davemark Yeah, I've been working on and off on a cross-poster app and that's definitely a problem… my plan was to have a way of somehow composing one message, then being able to customize it for some accounts with smaller/larger limit. But it definitely complicates things a lot for such tools (and even if just manually cross-posting by copy-paste).

@davemark I also suspect an increase in the character limit is on Bluesky’s roadmap.

@davemark I do social media for the @spacecityweather blog and post across all the nuevo socials. I’ve gotten pretty good at being able to edit down a longer Mastodon/Threads post for Bluesky, and frankly, the shorter, tighter post is often better. It’s more work, but as a journalist and sometime editor, I appreciate being forced to be succinct.

@davemark I’m not as much a fan and this is one of the reasons why.

@WarnerCrocker Same. I find myself abandoning posts on blue sky because I just can’t make it fit and say what I wanna say.

@davemark Yup.

Attitude, population, attendance and wit are excellent on BlueSky. But there is a death of a thousand cuts that keeps you away. Post length limit, being asked to change permissions every time (at least once a day) you post a photo- you interact less than you might.
