schizanon,

I'm actually enjoying reading my feed with https://schizo.social!

I really like having the "previous/newer" page scroll to the bottom, it kinda loosely approximates #infiniteScroll!

I think I may want to have the timelines maintain your position across the session so it doesn't skip over a bunch of new statuses when you refresh..

@schizanon My feed is very different. Are you massaging anything?

schizanon,

@licked no, just merging the feeds of multiple accounts.

different how?

I am using columns to create the grid view, so the chronological order is actually, down the first column, then from the top of the next and so on. this is unfortunate.

@schizanon That explains it. That it unfortunate.

schizanon,

@licked I can use CSSGrids, but then there are gaps in the columns (unless the user has enabled Firefox's masonry support). I might go back to that.

@schizanon one of my primary complaints of mastodon is missing stuff. i like it now that i realize the behavior. i have a high likelihood of seeing something i missed earlier.

i assume algos also re-show content for reinforcement. that literally just gave me the heebees.

@schizanon OK, I don't think this is your problem, but you have confirmed something I may have seen reports of.

I get a bunch of posts on yours, I don't on https://mastodon.social .

I subscribed to Raccoons Hourly, I only get it on yours.

I think it's a fedi issue.

schizanon,

@licked I am not hiding filtered statuses (yet), it may be that you have mute filters that are hiding those

@schizanon That was my first thought. It's not a complete explanation. I'll check.

schizanon,

@licked good looking out, I appreciate the 👀

@schizanon Could you put timestamps somewhere i dont have to clickthru? mouseover on something to show would be enuff.

schizanon,

@licked

At a time I would have disagreed with you on this; statuses aren't so important that I need to see them all.

But my primary complaint is seeing the same stuff over and over, and I'm realizing that constantly being brought to the top of the timeline is the cause.

schizanon,

@licked What if the schizo TL remembered your place; if you hadn't viewed in a day when you open it again you'd still be looking at yesterday's statues. There could be another button for "go to most recent" if you wanted it, but refreshing the page would always get you the same results.

schizanon,

@licked BTW I put a @supports conditional in the stylesheet, so that if you are using Firefox with the "masonry" grid-template-rows property enabled in about:config, you will get a CSSGrid layout that maintains a left to right chronological order!

@schizanon I saw the initial results of that. it looked super janky. i'll stick with the randomness of the 3 cols.

schizanon,

@licked I made some improvements; first of all the thumbnails now all have an aspect-ratio which prevents some of the load-in jank (but not all yet) and then I discovered masonry-autoflow: ordered which forces the order to remain stable https://www.smashingmagazine.com/native-css-masonry-layout-css-grid/#the-masonry-auto-flow-property

schizanon,

@licked the problem with masonry-autoflow: ordered is that it causes these big gaps at the bottoms of the columns. the other values will sort the rows to better "pack" the boxes at the expense of source-order

masonry-autoflow: next

schizanon,

@licked ultimately, I fear I'm going to need to set min/max heights for content to make these gaps less of a problem.

schizanon,

Next tasks on my todo:

  • hide filtered words (I have a LOT of those!)
  • display reply threads (haven't decided what this should look like)
  • hashtag timelines

I'm trying to focus on the reading experience, but I keep reaching for "favorites" and "boost" buttons.
