@thisismyglasgow I was there recently and the tour guide pointed out that they were designed for gas lighting, which would have flickered, sending shadows around the room...

@Jobob Humm, I'm not too sure about that. Gas lights of that time would have used a mantle specifically to provide a constant and unflickering source of light.
