@BeAware you might be able to do this via a 2 step migration:

Firstly migrate to an instance at temp.beware.live. Then do a self destruct on your old instance. Importantly wait for all sidekiq jobs (including retries of failed jobs!) to finish afterwards. This may take hours, days, or weeks.

Finally set up a new instance on your domain and migrate to it.

This may or may not work, so do at your own risk, but this is the only way I could conceptually imagine it might work. I’ve never heard of anyone actually attempting it, though, so this seems unknown territory…

@BeAware Also somewhat curious. I just know that when I did my Mastodon to Firefish and back to Mastodon adventure, it was on different URLs because I assumed it wasn't possible.

@BeAware I do have to admit, however, that Sharkey gives off extremely Firefish vibes to me. Everything from the software to the anime-centric official websites & communication. Maybe it's not fair, but if there was decent software I could use on Android, I'd be a little worried it'd meet the same fate as Firefish.

@RxBrad I think it's fairly safe, because it's a soft fork of Misskey. So if I understand it correctly, it's fairly simple to migrate back upstream.

@BeAware there's a self-destruct command within tootctl that leaves your current instance in a broken state.

It sends a Delete command to the known fediverse, so at the end there's little cache left in other servers.

So it may help you use the same domain with a different platform. But I don't know if it frees you from all and any federation troubles.

@BeAware its recommended to use a new domain or subdomain but it's possible to reuse a domain after it's been without an instance for a while

@Sharkey 🤷‍♂️I'm already currently redirecting my main domain to my profile on this subdomain because I've done this before. I can probably just do it again with a different subdomain/new domain.

Though, you say "for awhile", wonder why that could be. Because if I understood it correctly, each Fedi instance has public/private keys that are tied to the domain and federated. That's why it's not easy. I wonder why it would change after some time....🤔unless I was misunderstanding.

@BeAware instances tend to drop keys after a while also u could use your main domain if you already redirected it
