Just got a notification that the entire area including where we are at is under a severe tornado watch for the rest of the day.

Currently panicked and trying to figure out if we need to pack up and be ready to evacuate or what…

I was in the middle of writing a very difficult email to a client trying to resolve a semi-urgent issue 😭

@mariyadelano A Tornado Watch means the conditions are favorable to the formation of a tornado but does not mean a tornado is imminent. Pay attention to your surroundings, be alert to changes in weather, but try to not panic.

Recommendations for our exact location seem to be to stay in shelter and be ready to hide in the basement.

Thankfully we have one.

I’m currently just unsure how much to look outside vs look at the news vs pack things up to be ready to hide

My husband is calmer than me, he is from here.

@mariyadelano Best advice: keep your phone on and connected to the cell network. Tornado warnings go out to specific polygons via WEA: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/wireless-emergency-alerts-wea

You can also monitor watches and warnings in real-time from various apps, my favorite of which is RadarScope: https://www.radarscope.app

And relax! You'll be fine. We do this all the time in the midwest 🙂

So we seem to be located in a very weird safe spot between two zones of the storm. We can see the storm over Denver from our window, while our house still has direct sunlight.

So strange

codybrom,

@mariyadelano Stay safe and weather aware! I've been building an NWS weather alert interface because I get such bad weather anxiety. Maybe it can give you helpful and unbiased info: https://wx.watch/?location=NWS+Denver+CO&hideExpired=true

@codybrom oh thank you that is awesome!

timhadley,

@mariyadelano A tornado watch only means that atmospheric conditions favor the formation of the kinds of storms that can produce tornadoes. It just means to pay attention for possible warnings. Also, tornadoes here are usually weaker than the ones in the Plains and the South, because of the local geography (nearby mountains, relatively dry climate)….

timhadley,

@mariyadelano Turns out the hail and heavy rain were the bigger risk today! I hope you didn’t have too much where you are. I live in eastern Denver and we got a little hail, but only small hailstones (half-inch or less).

@timhadley we actually got barely any rain and zero hail! Very lucky.

Glad to hear you were safe as well

@mariyadelano Stay safe, ideally, look for a room with no windows inside the house. Evacuation is usually not an option with tornadoes, by the time you hear the alarm it’s already there, and a car is not where you want to be. Sorry if you already know this.

jeromey,

@mariyadelano Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for a Tornado. A warning means they one has formed in your area.

Personally, I wouldn't evacuate under a watch, but would want to know the whereabouts of my loved ones and know where to seek shelter: a basement or lower floor, in the middle of your home, away from windows.

Dogdroid,

@mariyadelano Oh man :( that sucks. I hope you are okay and can get to a safe place if needed.

KleinerGruenerKaktus,

@mariyadelano Oh, that's scary. I guess there's no basement?
Hopefully it will pass just with a warning 🍀🍀🍀🙏
