My god, I'm only trying to buy a new helmet and I'm so bewildered.
Virginia Tech helmet ratings, MIPS, the recent German ADAC trials that basically said the Uvex Urban Planet is the only helmet worth having (no MIPS tho) and now that one helmet is out of stock everywhere...
Ugh. What do I doooooo? I didn't want to have to think about this so haaaaaard. I'll accept recommendations. I have a decades old Giro helmet, and it's high time to upgrade.
Got one. After far too much to-and-fro I found myself looking at the Specialized Tone and decided that it was the one, and if it's not, I haven't spent too much money on it:
Chose the bright yellow one! Nice and visible. MIPS. Good price. 5 stars from Virginia Tech. Doesn't look as silly as its sister helmet, Mode (even if that one got a better score).
It's not very open, so might get a bit hot - if that's the case I'll find something else.
Yes it's around, just about, but not in the size or colour I want haha. I'm finding all this so hard to make a decision on, that I keep wavering and while I do, they pop out of stock 😬
@sarajw they test every year and last year had another winner. So yes, there may be better ones out there but that doesn't mean every other helmet is crap.
@RolandRides ah, interesting. Wonder if I can find last year's then... They did imply hardly any were even worth considering 'good', even the winner was only good, not very good.
@sarajw Specialized Align II is a really highly-rated helmet, with MIPS, and it’s reasonably priced. Ive not had any major crashes so can’t personally attest to the head protection (and I’d like to keep it that way), but it’s comfortable and is easily adjustable
@sarajw I might be speaking from a privileged bicycle-city-dwelling perspective, so I'm sorry if it comes across that way, but do you have a local bike shop that everyone goes to for repairs and such? They would surely be able to direct you and even if you don't purchase from them, would be a wealth of information.
@anniegreens there are lots of big bike shops and lots of littler ones but that are bit "boutique'. I like to be informed for myself before I enter a shop 😅
It is a bikey city but I don't have a shop I know I can trust.
When I go pick up the new bike I'll probably try some on, then. But I don't expect to get great, detailed advice.
