Karyoplasma,

Trying to go to and stay in jail is the single best strategy after the majority of assets have been bought out. It allows you to essentially skip turns by being safe to not land on others’ properties. Meanwhile, you are still collecting parking fees from yours.

Bipta,

A common house rule is no collecting money in jail.

Karyoplasma,

Our family rules for Monopoly is to never play Monopoly so we don’t murder each other.

For anyone playing Monopoly soon: house rules almost always make the game WORSE.

To play a good game of Monopoly, any rules that are imposed should be in place to help remove money from the game. Rules such as “can’t collect rent from jail” or “fines collect at Free Parking” only serve to prolong the game and make it more annoying for everyone involved. Properties shouldn’t be skipped when not bought: auction them; that way the properties sell quicker and the game moves faster. Also, don’t waste your time going around the whole board once before buying properties.

Playing Monopoly the way it was intended is quick-paced, brutal, and only lasts a couple of hours or so.
