They have created their own (new) protocol "The AT Protocol" while there was a puuurefctly good protocol available, ActivityPub (the one Mastodon and other Fediverse software uses)
With their decision they have created another "island of social platforms" while ActivityPub is adopted more widely each day
@stux More import is that the reason they developed their own protocol is to maintain centralized control over the "federates" network. With ActivityPub, there is no central point it control---servers themselves are free to federate, or not federate, as they please. In AT protocol, BlueSky maintains control.
@stux Being able to create custom feeds is pretty neat and I wouldn't mind seeing a similar feature make it's way to some fedi project. That's the best feature I think they have.
@stux There's no need for them to retain that info. They could ask for your DOB, then set a flag that says you were over 18 (or whatever age is required), and never store your DOB. It's what we do at my employer.
Why do they need to keep a hold of an exact birthdate? Are they gonna send you a present on your birthday? (No.)
