Getting started. Tim Hammond, President and founder of GALDEF, is introducing the documentary, "CURED".

Medical professionals demonized and pathologized homosexuality. The parallels with the demonization and pathologization of normal male anatomy will be explored after the film, which lasts an hour.

Julie Sandler is here as well! Julie is part of the team that made CURED.

The film is starting now. CURED was supported by American Psyciatric Association and AARP among other organizations. Please note that there will be discussions of homophobia including violent/coercive treatment of gay men and boys.

The documentary begins with news and media reports demonstrating common beliefs that homosexuality is a psychological disturbance. But is being treated like a second class citizen good for mental health?

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Children are indoctrinated from an early age that homosexuality is dangerous, a mental illness, not normal, and gives other people permission to coerce and control you, such as putting you in a mental institution or forcing you into heterosexual marriage.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) was the most important, richest, most influential psychiatric organization on earth, and in 1952 the diagnostic and statistical manual (DSM) listed homosexuality as a mental disorder, under "sexual deviations", in the same general category as pedophilia.

You couldn't be out and have the social associations, jobs, and relationships you wanted.

Gay men were left to think "maybe I should be cured".

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Talk therapy was the most common treatment, but some people were subjected to more intense actions. "We could castrate you, but let's try some treatments and go from there. Next thing I'm going to a mental institution getting shock therapy." Rick Stokes speaks about how he was treated.

"You would hope against hope that it wasn't your time yet, that it wasn't your turn to go into the little room."

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Although rarer, some queer people were subjected to lobotomy in the pursuit of a "cure".

People erased their memories, whole chunks of themselves to conform to what society told them about themselves and their feelings.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Introducing the Daughters of Bilitis, founded in 1965 as one of the first national lesbian organizations. OMG these ladies are delightful and have a beautiful meet-cute story. These women weren't intimidated by the psychiatrists.

The Mattachine Society is part of this story as well. Franklin Kameny of the Mattachine Society joined forces with the Daughters of Bilitis to protest the stigmatization of homosexuality.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

"A lot of shoddy, sloppy psuedoscience masquerading as science"

Paraphrase: Only unhappy gay people would go to a psychiatrists, so why would they think gay people are happy?

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Freud had a benign view of being gay, but after his death, his pupils began to say he was wrong and that homosexuality could be cured. That was the status quo until 1948. Here comes Dr. Alfred Kinsey!

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Dr. Kinsey documented that sexual orientation was not dichotomous or binary, horrifying the conservative psychiatrists.

Psychiatry tried to discredit Kinsey. You couldn't be gay and be normal. The psychiatrists were modeling the conservative values of American society.

Cut to Vietnam protests, 1969. The Civil Rights Movement, the Women's Movement, the Anti-war Movement.

If you want to get attention to an issue, and you want to make a change, you gotta take it to the streets.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Stonewall. Enough is enough. We aren't gonna take it anymore. It was the people against the police. This was not a riot, this was an uprising!

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

That's when gay people started saying, "Yes we can stand up, yes we can."

GAY POWER!

The movement became bigger, with different "young turks" helping to organize diverse groups together toward a common cause.

You have to have righteous anger. It's essential to get what you want. We had to rise above our differences. You're having a tough time cause you're gay? I'm having a tough time over here cause I'm black and gay!

Gay Activists Alliance!

Seeing other queer people laughing, joking, dancing, being happy - if there's nothing wrong with them, then there's nothing wrong with me.

There was a lot of resentment and fury about having to suffer, and gay liberation wanted to remove homosexuality from the DSM.

Nothing would change so long as we were burdened by the sickness label. We had to go up against psychiatry and fight.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Activists snuck into the 1970 APA convention, and then interrupted speeches by anti-gay hatemongers.

Aversion therapy is a polite term for genital shock paired with pornography. Psychiatrists were promoting aversion therapy as a form of conversion therapy.

"There is no cure for that which is not a disease."

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

In every major city, something happened. It was a national movement. Activists invaded a ceremony of psychiatrists and the psychiatrists beat the activists with their gold medals of psychiatric achievement around their necks, calling the gay activists Nazis.

The demonstrations shocked the APA.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Activist demanded psychiatrists clear up their own fucking minds. Mental institutions? Bullshit. Shock therapy? No thank you.

"Free speech" has been a monologue for more than half a century.

Gay and lesbian people were saying that they were the experts on their own lives, and it was up to the psychiatrists to get educated.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Charles Socarides became the biggest proponent of curing homosexual while simultaneously saying he was for civil rights, but his writings represented the epitome of arguments used to deny gay people equal rights.

Now we are hearing from Charles's gay son. Very interesting!

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Someone within the APA had to advance the idea that being gay or lesbian be not considered a mental illness. The APA reform efforts were undertaken mostly by people who were young and unknown. These people vetted more senior members of the APA and carefully voted for board members.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Media brought a fresh breeze into the movement and into dinner table conversations.

TV show round table:

"Why do you have such a vested interest in trying to program people for this one way of life, to conform?"

OMG Rev. Magora Kennedy is so badass.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Activists pressed for meetings where we could challenge the sickness label.

The APA finally agreed in 1972.

Activists looked for someone who is both a psychiatrist and gay to testify about their experience of being a gay psychiatrist. "NO WAY! I'll lose my job and medical license. There is still a lot of homophobia in the APA."

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

John Fryer became Dr. H. (Homosexual) Anonymous in a mask and wig. What incredible images of the texas chain saw style mask at the meeting lol.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

"I'm in disguise so that I may speak freely about being a homosexual psychiatrist"

Many of us work 20 hours daily to protect institutions that would chew us up and spit us out.

This is the greatest loss, our honest humanity.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Activists get entry into the meeting where the DSM got ironed out.

Evelyn Hooker ran tests on gay and straight people, and showed that experts could not discriminate results between gay and straight participants.

"You must choose between the undocumented theories have unjustly harmed a great number of people, or the controlled scientific studies cited here."

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

APA debated the illness question.

"The worst thing about your diagnosis is that people believe it. Nothing makes you sick like believing you're sick."

Activists presented the cold hard facts. Psychiatry was the cornerstone of a system designed to make gay people sick.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Activists nominated vetted people to the board to get political change in the APA. Gay is good!

This was one of the most considered issues in APA history. The APA decided to change. Headlines showing doctors say homosexuality not an illness and the like.

But that's not the end of the story. Socarides led the anti-queer movement, demanding that the issue be revisited.

Socarides' gay son cornered him. Socarides put a gun to his head. "You can't do this to me!"

Amazing ego.

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

1974: After the referendum, homosexuality removed from list of mental disorders, upholding their earlier decision. Socarides lost.

The effect was electric. GAY IS GOOD!

Parades!

Yay!

Epilogue:
Now we are reviewing GID and Gender dysphoria, conversion therapy, and cut to today...

ttpphd,
@ttpphd@mastodon.social avatar

Saul Levin is the APA director and he's gay! And his accent is more notable than his sexual orientation.

Rev Kennedy is an icon and leader, love her.

John Fryer revealed he was H. Anonymous.

Socardies died and his son was part of the Clinton administration on LGBTQ issues.

Obama apologized ]to Kameny for his firing.

Barbara and Kay were icons!

"We didn't want kids feeling bad about themselves growing up. We were doing it for younger generations not just for ourselves."

As the credits run, we mark different landmarks in LGBTQ rights since the 1970s.
