@ferngirl@bookstodon The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store, by James MacBride. I previously read his Deacon King Kong and loved it - humor and the strength of community and redemption, along with great narrative voice to boot. This book has similar themes, but set in a very poor African-American and Jewish immigrant community during the Depression in a small Pennsylvania town. Highly recommend!
@educaremom@ferngirl@bookstodon Just finished The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. It's a great story and celebration of the Black and Jewish diaspora in the US in the '30s. But it is the care and love of others and connections amongst communities and an author who doesn't dwell on the negative that are so uplifting. This smart writer weaves recognition of peoples living on stolen land as a condemnation of white privilege/settler colonialism that is the negative force in this book.
@ferngirl@bookstodon Resurrections by Ada Hoffman, for a review. It's short stories interspersed with poems - can't really judge poetry as not my forte, but some of the short stories are mind-blowing.
