Linux users! Please update your BOINC 8.0.0 (that contains backdoor in liblzma/xz library) to BOINC 8.0.1. TL;DR: You are still safe. More details here: …blogspot.com/…/boinc-release-800-and-liblzma.htm…
This is yet another reason why Linux stands to benefit from solutions like Flatpak. It’s a pain for developers to support so many desperate distributions including ones which may elect to modify their code.
Flatpak is not a native solution for Linux, unfortunately. And we have a Flatpak build of BOINC (supported by a volunteer): flathub.org/ru/apps/edu.berkeley.BOINC
Petals is another project like this, very interesting. Somebody is going to come along and build a blockchain for buying/selling AI power (and some method to verify that work) and that service’s cost is going to drop through the floor. Anybody will be able to access it. A bunch of projects are “working on it”, it will be exciting to see who wins that race. The same thing has basically already been done for file storage.
Long COVID cases just keep rising and we will be seeing more cases similar to Diana. “Learning to live with COVID” don’t mean that we can just “let it rip”, it’s becoming more evident day by day. Hopefully 2024 will be the start of a turning point from societal perspective.
Which projects even still support working screensavers? SETI was always the big one and I don’t remember other projects I ran, if any, implementing it.
Nice, will use the design for new flyers or cards next month… Some comment: im not a fan of the double use of the word computer in “your computers spare computional power”… Had the same problem with the german translation and dont have suggestions for improvement unfortunately :)
I’m here from all, sorry, but “what are mathematical constants” is a funny question. Like those heavily edited videos where they ask people on holiday stupid questions, and they only show the stupid answers. Except you might not have to edit this one.
“It’s a big math stoppage. It’s like the speed of light, but the speed of sound… does sound travel in space? HEY WILMA! DOES SOUND TRAVEL IN SPACE?”
Not at this point in time, but best place to keep up to date on our work is probably our newsletter thesciencecommons.substack.comYou can also always sit in on our board meetings if you want to catch some more day-to-day (find them in our Discord). Got some BIG BOINC bounties completed recently around the Linux packaging issues. Thank you for your support :).
Ah yes thanks, but i registered for the newsletter a few month ago (twice later for testing) but i didnt get a single mail since then. Nice to hear about the completed bointies! Another topic: I send some coins from time to time, but it feels strange not to get any feedback about the transaction (in the case of crypto)… for example, if i wanted to donate in 5 years, i wouldnt know if the wallet address on the website was still active (one or two links on the website are also dead). Something like an automated board on the website which showed something like xxx coins or dollars donation at #time and date would be nice to have and would also help to show transparency i guess… Anyway i know you guys also have more important things to do… Thanks for your impressive work on the progress!
The newsletter only comes out every other month or so, and it only comes out when we have news to report so as to not bog down your inbox. We intend to publish our yearly accounting report each year at tax time showing how much money went to our various projects. The automated board would be great but would take development time away from our other priorities, and gets complex especially as we have multiple streams for donations (paypal, crypto, etc). I’d love to know about the dead links though we’ll get those fixed asap. Thanks for your support!
Ah ok I understand :) A yearly accounting report would be nice to read when the time comes! Also i didnt know i could close the signup for newsletter popup to read the news history lol… I sent you the only dead link i found right now per PM
I crunch for nearly all of them. My favourite all-time is World Community Grid, but also loving SiDock right now for their open source covid drug development.
