@mentallyalex thank you! It's that weird thing where life can still feel normal here but definitely something has changed about the tone and flavor of the place
@kitoconnell This could sound problematic, but I really don't understand the "White Lives Matter" thing. Apart from a lot of specific mental health issues, don't white people still pretty much have it good in today's society? I thought the point of #blacklivesmatter was that black people are a minority group that tends to get the most bullshit thrown at them for not yet having as much power as the white community.
@nurahiyon_dyl without getting too detailed, I think it's fascism? Fascism typically depends on creating an in-group that is both powerful yet victimized by everyone they define into their out group.
@kitoconnell Oh I see. So then... it's totally not meant to make sense to outsiders of that group then. I'd call that bad marketing but I guess it's working over there...
@nurahiyon_dyl I think also, a lot of folks are a little worse off than generations before, even if these guys are still relatively more privileged. If you blame that increase in poverty, switch to gig work over reliable jobs, etc on immigrants, POC, whomever then you are building a fascist power base. It relies on splitting them off from the rest of the working class instead of building class solidarity
@kitoconnell I'm not sure I totally understand, but it feels like segregating others is a way for disillusioned people to try to simplify a complex issue (in my country, we call it the "out of sight, out of mind" mentality).
@nurahiyon_dyl@kitoconnell Just did a search for blacklivesmatter to prove a point to someone else abotu something else. Saw yall interaction and felt i needed to point something out here too.
Also at the root of the white lives matter thing up there is this. The very idea of who can and cannot control language. Narcissism. Etc.
You are correct to note that black people came up with/created blacklivesmatter. And did so for a specific purpose. Part of the reason you're seeing white lives matter on that flag is because of the outrage that black people created a term that is used by more than just black people. Period.
White people in america have had a history of this. And pointing to that history is..the n-word...hard r. Black people modified it. And it became n-word with an a. Which caused outrage because black people did so.
Further back though? Playing the race card. More on that below.
@nurahiyon_dyl@kitoconnell Real quick. Playing the race card originally meant a white person using racism in a majority white country in an effort to win votes without actually promising or doing anything. And it was looked down on.
But overall. That was one of the first instances racist white people found that manipulating a word or term could have great results for them. As the term playing the race card is known today? It's meant to be ANY and EVERY person of color pointing to or even saying something is racist.
The white lives matter flag up top? It's about a white woman who attempted to help overthrow the government being killed on jan 6th. But it's also the attempt to disrespect black people and to steal a general term from black people. To make white lives matter be more known than blacklivesmatter.
Because of their outrage that black people would ever even think to ask or demand not to be killed. Ego. Narcissism. Etc.
@nurahiyon_dyl@kitoconnell Again. You both are correct. But the stuff behind that stems back much further.
The anger you see there. Stems from white people being upset that black people are even heard at all. Since they think so little of black people. Even words and terms we come up with...to them...should be replaced/ignored.
